Hi, my name is marec and I'll be your contest manager for the Wearable Art Contest. This should be a fun contest and a great way to learn some new sewing techniques.

The Rules
Wearable Art Contest
June 1st through June 30th, 2010

The object of this contest is to sew a piece of art that you can wear!

Wearable Art, for purposes of this contest, is defined as sewn clothing that is intended to convey a personal or unique artistic statement. This is by necessity a very general definition, to allow artistic freedom. Items entered must be sewn clothing for an adult or teen. Children's clothing, while lovely, is not eligible for this contest.

A review with picture(s) is required. In the review, if you had a particular vision when you created the piece, you can describe it and tell the readers what led you down the path you went. This is not required, but might help inspire others to create wearable art items.

The winner of the contest will be determined by member vote. There will also be a randomly drawn winner from all completed entries.
Prizes
Sponsored by

First Prize: $200 Gift Certificate
Random Entry Prize: $100 Gift Certificate

Things to consider when sewing or voting:
- Does the clothing make you think 'art' rather than merely 'function'?
- Is the clothing wearable, rather than being so artistic as to have lost it's function?
- Is it artistic or merely trendy, odd, or different? This is highly subjective, but a garment that is different than most is not necessarily artistic. And an artistic garment is not necessarily different in design than most, but would be more ornamental.

*Rules that apply to all contests:
1. All reviews must be entered for submission by 11:59 PM Eastern Time on the last day of the contest. Contest dates will be listed for each contest.

2. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, patterns may be drafted, tweaked, and muslined before the contest date, but fabric for the pieces entered may not be laid out or cut till the start date of the contest. Fabric may be pretreated before the contest date.

3. Items intended for sale, or for which you were or will be paid to make, do not qualify for any contest, but items made for charity are welcome!

4. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, all reviews written for a contest entry must include a picture of the entry.

Contest Eligibility

1. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the start of a contest is eligible to enter.

2. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the end of a contest is eligible to vote in a contest.

3. Any member who's won 1st place in a contest on Pattern Review ended in the previous 4 months is ineligible to win another contest (for that 4 month period).

Some clarifications and reminders
Your item must be sewn clothing, not jewelry, or accessories.
Items must be made for an adult or teen.
Your goal is to create a piece of clothing that conveys a unique and artistic statement.
And above all, have fun!

So glad to see the rules for this contest. I will be entering it! Have some wonderful Southwest themed fabrics that I had planned on making into a jacket. Gotta dig out my pattern now that rules up. Hmmmm.... wonder where that cotton underlining is hiding in my stash?? Gotta get all my things lined up for the start next week.

As you think about this contest, you may want to see what others do in the field of wearable art. The range is very broad, and some pieces verge on not wearable. Below is a list of some places to visit for inspiration:

I've been planning for this contest ever since I saw it on the contest list. The rules are great - simple to understand, broad enough to include many types of garments. I'll be ready to get started next week!

If I'm hand dying, does that have to wait until June 1, or is that fabric prep?

Hmmmmmmm..... I really didn't dream of entering any contests this year, but this has my juices flowing! I've been wanting to make a sort of artsy jacket out of some fabric I have, and some I have coming. Maybe I'll take it a step further in the art department.... My skills won't be on a par w/ many, I'm sure, but the motivation & support could make it really fun!

Dixie, Amy-may, JillyBe: Wonderful that you are joining! More talent and creativity to add to the mix. I'm looking forward to watching your progress. Amy-may, I'm reading and interpreting the rules as no dying until June 1.

Quote:

I believe the word "dying" should be added to our general rules and "pretreat" should be defined as washing/drying/pressing.

Uhm... Fabric can't really die, you might call it dyeing. Sorry to be a stickler.

Hmmm... What if it is artful, rather than arty? This is interesting.

I *knew* that was wrong...thanks. More wordsmithing: artful is showing talent or skill; arty is pretentious and showy. I would say that slapping on some appliques and attaching garters for no reason would be "arty" while using appliques to highlight a design feature or a garment's line would be "artful".

This will be an interesting contest.

I'll check in with everyone in the am.
