My 10-year-old niece has expressed interest in sewing over the last year and has borrowed my second machine a few times to make simple craft items - fleece scarfs and such.  She wants to take a few classes at JoAnns.  Plus my DSIL (her Mom) has also borrowed my machine for some basic mending.

I noticed that Hancock's is having a doorbuster sale the Saturday after Thanksgiving for a Janome HF107.  Price on the box is regularly $179, sale $129, doorbuster $69.  I'm thinking this would be a great machine for a beginner and may get this for them for Christmas.

It has 6 basic stitches, a 4-step buttonhole, free-arm, and weighs just 11 lbs.

I've never sewn on a Janome but they get excellent reviews.  I don't want to flush $69 but it does sound like a great beginner machine.  Anyone familiar with these or have another recommendation?

Lori, I have not sewn on this little 107 but I did buy the little Janome that is similar at Sears for a family member. I was so pleased with this machine when I tested it. It is very similar to my Jem Silver. This little Sears mini machine is also very quiet. It offers several stitches with blind hem and a 4 step buttonhole. The reg. price is $99 but I got the sale price for this gift for $79. Then I saw them all over eBay for far less. I have seen posts on other websites where users liked these. Sears now offers this little blue machine in new pearl colors on their website. I assume the 107 at Hancocks is a similar machine since both are by Janome.

I have the New Home 106, which was the Janome Jem clone.   Apparently this has been succeeded by the 107.  I suspect the machine is very similar, but I haven't taken a close look at the 107.

Anyway, I'm very pleased with my machine, and I am a self-taught beginner.  It's small, lightweight, but sews very well.  I've done 6 layers of cotton twill, hemmed sheer curtains, sewed up fleece and various cotton knits.  The straight stitch is really effortless (I believe quilters use the model as a portable machine for good reason).  I haven't done a button hole yet.  The only "trouble" I've had with it so far is that it doesn't like overcasting knits -- it doesn't feed well enough on only one feed dog.  But that's minimal, as knits don't ravel and I got myself a serger.

So, I don't think it's a babied version of a real machine; I think it's a real machine with a smaller number of stitch options.  But then, it is my beginner's machine, and I haven't -quite- outgrown it yet.  So take that as you will :)

I also saw the doorbuster sale; I think I'm going to recommend it to my friend who wants to get into sewing too. :)

Thank you for the information.  Sounds like this is just what they need.  One more Christmas present checked off my list!
