Does anyone else have a Bernina 930 (mine is from 1987) with the electronic needle up feature? I bought this used recently and the needle up feature seems to be too loud- if that is possible. I am wondering if I can have it disabled to not hear this noise every time I sew? Other that that I love the machine.

I don't believe there should be a significant noise when the needle up feature operates. My 930 doesn't make any loud noise. It might be worth a trip to a local Bernina tech to have it checked out. I bought my 930 new in 1984 - it is a wonderful machine. Hope you enjoys yours too.

As I recall, my Bernina 930 made a clunky noise when I stopped sewing and the needle went automatically up. You might have the first editions of this machine. That first edition did not have needle down position. You have to move the crank wheel. Later 930's had the needle stop in the down position and you could use the foot pedal to bring the needle to the up position which is a preferred model of the two. Sandy

I was assuming that marikesh meant that she had the later model -perhaps not? Mine, bought in 1984, does have the foot pedal to bring the needle down. It sounded as though that was what was making that loud noise in her machine. By 1987, wouldn't all of the 930s have had that feature? I still think it shouldn't make that noise.

Edited to correct the word up to down - the foot pedal brings the needle down. I believe that might be what craftysandy meant too.

The 1983-1984 Bernina 930's did not have needle down. You couldn't make the needle go down with the foot pedal. The Bernina engineers for whatever reason decided that it was better for the needle to always end in the up posistion. When you stop sewing, the sound you hear is the needle going up. It is loud. Now, it needle post/bar might need oiling and that could reduce the sound, but the sound of the needle going up doesn't ever go away.

After reading your post, I went upstairs and turned on my 930 to be sure that my memory wasn't failing me! My 930, bought new from a Bernina dealer at the beginning of 1984, always stops with the needle in the up position. Pushing the heel of the foot control puts the needle in the down position. There are no loud sounds made either when the needle stops up or when the foot control is used to move the needle down.

The only sound this machine ever makes is a very soft, smooth, and pleasing click. I'm the kind of person who would be sensitive to any loud noise from my Berninas, and this soft click isn't a sound that I would even have paid attention to if not for trying to help with this discussion on PR. This is a very quiet machine!

If you have an early Bernina 930, could you attach a later model 930 foot control and get the needle down function? Someone has removed the serial number sticker from my 930, so I don't know if it is an early or later model. Is it the foot control that makes all the difference, or is there a switch added to the later machines? It sure would be handy to have needle down!

I have a 930 as my primary machine. It does make a little clicking sound when the needle goes up after that last stitch. I wouldn't call it obnoxious or bothersome but you might be more sensitive. I don't think you can do anything about it.

As an aside, I LOVE this machine. I hope you can get used to the sound. If it is really loud it might just need a tune-up.

It does make a little noise. I think this is normal.

There's some stiffness and clunky noises when changing the buttonhole steps too. This is also normal.
