Date: 8/24/10 1:32 PM Would it be hard to find a lid for a Rocketeer? I found one listed 1 1/2 hours away for almost nothing. It is missing the flip up lid on top. I just emailed the seller to see if she has the lid. Comes with all sorts of attachments. I don't know if it works but I did ask. Do you think I should go for it or pass it up? It is in a cabinet that is in horrible condition. Looks like she has a featherweight sitting beside it in the case. Maybe she'd throw that in? ------ ~Diana~

Date: 8/24/10 1:44 PM The hinges on the lids and face plates on the Rocketeers are notorious for breaking, and they are NOT repairable. This is probably why the lid is missing — the hinges broke.
If you are getting this machine for sewing and need a cheap machine, fine. If you are getting into collecting, I personally wouldn't buy a Rocketeer with broken hinges or missing pieces.

I have both a Singer 500 and 503 and truly love them. I'd highly recommend owning and experiencing the pleasure of sewing on one.
However. . .
Since a huge part of the Rocketeer appeal is the aesthetic, be wary of one with broken or missing lids. As Soolip mentions, the hinges are a notorious weak point on these wonderful machines. While replacement lids do show up on eBay at a price, if it's the hinge on the main part of the body that is broken, the fix (if even possible) will be less than pretty at best. My 2¢. HTH.
ETA: I purchased my 503 without its top lid, bought a replacement on eBay, and successfully attached it as the hinge portion on the body was intact. It's a thing of beauty, the Rocketeer. -- Edited on 8/24/10 2:39 PM -- ------ Vintage Pfaff 130-50010; Bernina 730 Record; Singer 15-125; Singers 500 & 503; Singer 431G |

Date: 8/24/10 2:33 PM I see them without the lids now and then too, but have not bought one.
I was wondering why people didn't just replace the hinge... Or just lay the lid on there with a touch of tape if necessary--
So if you did see a lid on ebay, you would have to see if it had hinges, it sounds like. Sometimes a part cost half what the machine does.

I would rather have a 401 which is the same thing but not as slanty, than a 501 with no lid.

I am beginning to see the truth in that statement and have been looking online and reading info on the 401/401a. I like the look of the Rocketeer, but really don't think I'd want one without the lid -- even if it is $20! ------ ~Diana~

Date: 8/24/10 4:08 PM I bought one that has a lid but no cute stitching chart which goes on the inside of the lid. I found one today via the sewitsforsale yahoo group. But, yes, it comes at a price -- $25!! It's an intact lid, and to me it's worth it cause now I have a spare lid in case one breaks.
My face plate door is hanging on by one hinge. The post is stuck in the hole on the machine side, and the door part where the hole is, is broken. I have had someone tell me to use JB Weld to repair it. I should have inspected the machine more carefully, but totally forgot to open that door. I think if I would have done so and saw that broken I wouldn't have bought it. I've seen one face plate door on ebay and it was $49!!! ------ Bernina 730E, 530, and 350PE

Date: 8/24/10 7:16 PM Yeah, I know, but I really just wanted that plate. My machine just looks empty without the plate! ------ Bernina 730E, 530, and 350PE
