Date: 9/20/10 9:24 PM Costume Contest
Get all dressed up - - - in a costume.
- Contest will begin Oct. 1 and run until Oct 31st. Items sewn prior to Oct. 1st cannot be entered into the contest
- Costumes do not have to be only Halloween costumes. Any costume can be entered.
- All sewing must be during October. Patterns may be previous used or first time patterns.
- You can enter as many items as you want in the contest.
- Pet costumes are also included.
- A review is required for each item which is entered in the contest. (If the item is made from the same pattern you've reviewed once, you can update that review and enter it into the contest.)
The winner will be determined by member votes.
Voting begins Nov. 2nd and ends Nov. 10th.
Suggested voting (and sewing) considerations:
- How is the quality of construction (compared to the entrant's skill level)?
- Does the fabric selected work well with the costume style?
- If it's an historical costume, is it similar to original?
- If it's a pet costume, is it comfortable for the pet?
- Is this a particularly creative costume?
- Is this idea useable by others?
First place winner will be decided by member vote.
There will also be an Random Entry prize from the completed entries.
*Rules that apply to all contests:
1. All reviews must be entered for submission by 11:59 PM Eastern Time on the last day of the contest. Contest dates will be listed for each contest.
2. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, patterns may be drafted, tweaked, and muslined before the contest date, but fabric for the pieces entered may not be laid out or cut till the start date of the contest. Fabric may be pretreated before the contest date.
3. Items intended for sale, or for which you were or will be paid to make, do not qualify for any contest, but items made for charity are welcome!
4. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, all reviews written for a contest entry must include a picture of the entry.
Contest Eligibility

Date: 9/21/10 3:32 AM I'm 100% joining this. I've got a serious amount of halloween costuming to do this year. Video game characters, Kratos (god of war) and a Little Sister (bioshock).
Now can i pre-dye my fabric before hand? the fabric for the little sister (my cosutme) has to be a specific pattern, dark and light purple stripes but i cannot find that here in canada, so it requires hand dying. ------ 2005- 38.10m
2006- 278.80m
2007- 478.35m
2008 - 665.09m
2009 - 751.91m
2010- 1500m+ sewn 51m
2011-?? sewn 53m
2012- 35.1m
I own three kilometres. Well on the way to a fourth.

Date: 9/30/10 6:41 PM I am sooooo ready to get started on this. DD's costume is intricate. I'm using at least three different patterns plus some self drafting.
BTW, how do I do a review if I use more than one pattern for the same costume? |

Date: 10/2/10 6:02 AM When morphing patterns, a good rule of thumb is to review the piece that would be most helpful to others sewing the same pattern. It also depends on the situation:
- Situation 1: Using different pattern pieces in same garment:
I usually base the review on the piece where the most fitting is done. For example, if I use the bodice from one pattern and sleeves from another, I would write my review for the bodice piece, because that's the piece with the darts, etc.
- Situation 2: Using a pattern piece as a base, but making radical re-drafting adjustments:
If my base pattern has been re-drafted it so heavily that my review would no longer would be useful to other sewers, then I would put "No pattern Used" or "My Own Pattern" and then just mention the pattern number in my review text. For example, I made a half vest in which I started with the bodice front of a vest. But after my changes, it didn't resemble the original piece at all, so my reviewing it would be no help to others, so I put "my own pattern"
- Situation 3: Using 2 patterns for two different garments
Say if you are making a top using one pattern, and a skirt using a different pattern, your will probably need to do a master review like you do for contests like wardrobe contest. Basically you review the top and skirt patterns separately and then create a third "master" review which talks about your costume as a whole and contains links to the other pieces. In this case, only enter the master review to the contest gallery. Do not enter the separate pieces, because you only want people voting for your whole costume, not on just the top or the skirt.
Hope that helps, sorry it's long, I'm feeling a little wordy today =) -- Edited on 10/2/10 6:06 AM -- |
