Date: 11/2/10 3:31 PM Can somebody please tell me what it takes to receive a "Very Helpful" rating on a review? I feel like I put a lot of time and effort into my reviews by including pictures and what I feel is a lot of information on the project. I literally spend hours contemplating what I'm going to talk about in the review, take notes, photograph different phases of the process as well as the final product and then compiling the final review. I get discouraged when someone rates my review as a "helpful" one. Help me to improve my reviews so they'll fall into the "very helpful" category. TIA! ------ Judy |

Date: 11/2/10 3:42 PM I don't know why people do that. If I read and enjoy and like a review, it's gets a Very Helpful. If I don't care for it, I leave nothing so that a person's "star" thingies aren't lowered. Sigh....I hope you will continue to review if you feel you have something to share. The whole star thing is completely objective and always reminds me of "The Star-Bellied Sneetches."

Date: 11/2/10 3:47 PM I really hope you don't get too discouraged. I just did a "spot check" of a few of your reviews and they seem very good to me. Also, each one I clicked on either had only very helpful ratings or actually no ratings.
Ratings of course are products of the personal opinion of the reader about what is helpful.
One thing you could (b/c I'm assuming you really are asking for constructive criticism) is include the body size when you make something and then evaluate the fit. Doesn't have to be too personal. Saying "body measurements were in between 5 and 6 so I made a 6 which fit nicely" is enough.

HTH,
JEF This, for me, is a huge piece of helpful (or actually...very helpful..lol) information. Really, even if you note that, for example, you cut your usual size and it seemed to run a bit big, that's a great help. A lot of times I do look to reviews to find a reasonable starting point in which pattern envelope to buy (since I can't flat pattern measure before I buy), since I seem to be on the "break" a lot.
I didn't check out your reviews (only have a minute here), but like everyone else said, don't sweat it. I get a "helpful" on just about every review I do, and I can be thorough to a fault sometimes. (Maybe my reviews are too long for that "helpful" reviewer? Who knows.) But at any rate, I think the vast majority of the people here are thankful for any info you are willing to put out there, especially when you DO take the time to do details, photos, etc.
And many people think they ARE being kind by rating you "helpful," too. It's kind of a goofy system, so I say review on and don't worry! We appreciate your efforts!!

Date: 11/2/10 4:45 PM I appreciate your input and will include sizing information in my reviews in the future. I seems it would also be a good idea to quit stressing about the rating system and just carry on. Thanks again. ------ Judy |

Date: 11/2/10 4:58 PM For me the difference is I read lots of reviews, but if I'm not planning on making it (say, a doggie coat, for example) it doesn't matter how very helpful it is it's not very helpful to me at that particular point in time. To be honest, I only check off the box because its manditory, I never look at them on my own reviews or others - if I want something specific, I search for it. Then I read all the reviews and make up my own mind about the item. ------ http://sewstashsew.wordpress.com/

Date: 11/2/10 7:03 PM Sue, it isn't mandatory to check the box -- you may leave it unchecked, as I sometimes do because the woman who wrote the review of the doggie coat or the prom dress may have spent hours preparing her review in the hopes of gaining enough points to earn her first star. ------ The essence of life is statistical improbability on a colossal scale.

Date: 11/2/10 8:42 PM Also, I think many reviews garner a 'helpful' instead of 'very helpful' because of the placement of the choices. I think rearranging the choices to Very Helpful, then Helpful, Needs more Info, and then Off Topic would be good, er, helpful. ;-) ------ Patti
