Date: 11/3/10 6:53 PM Ok.....so I just drove 2 1/2 hours to Dallas today, and couldn't find any silk jersey!!!!! and now as I'm looking online, pretty much the only silk jersey I can find is 40 bucks a yard! I physically can't bring myself to buy that!! So anyways, are there any fabrics I can use in place of this silk jersey? Maybe matte jersey?? dunno. The color I need is black......
Also, this will be used for a formal dress- should I use a lining with a knit??? Never done it before, and not sure what kind of fabric to use for a lining on this knit... |

Date: 11/3/10 7:13 PM I would think that a rayon jersey would be most similar as a substitute.
I'm not sure about lining. I have seen people mentioning lining knits with tricot before, but I don't have any experience with that.
Good luck with the project!

Date: 11/3/10 8:07 PM Observe, my dear, and be tempted: Gorgeous Fabrics has silk jersey (some of it in extra wide widths) for under $30/yard. One does have to figure in shipping, but even so.... |

Date: 11/3/10 8:32 PM Does it need to be solid black?

1 member likes this. Date: 11/3/10 8:35 PM Don't forget about the silk jersey at Fabric Mart Fabrics.
I think a quality rayon jersey would work, check with Emma One Sock and Gorgeous Fabrics. NAYY ------ I'm finally a blogger!

Date: 11/3/10 8:37 PM BTW, where did you go to look for fabric in Dallas? Golden' D'Or had a lot of silks the last time I was there but I don't recall silk jersey either. ------ I'm finally a blogger!

Date: 11/3/10 9:41 PM I did go to D'or- it had a HUGE selection, but unfortunately they didn't have any silk jersey- the employee said it was too pricey for them to buy and then try and sell...... so naturally none of the other places had it either! bummer! |

Date: 11/3/10 9:41 PM Matte jersey is a good substitute. it's a dressy fabric and it has a similar drape and stretch. Matte jersey can be transparent when a flash hits it so you'll have to decide if you want to line it. Depends on what you are making. You want to look for rayon matte jersey as it's much nicer than polyester. Emmaonesock has two right now, a 100% rayon and a blend.

I have a sample of the gray one and it is lovely. It's not all that much cheaper than silk jersey. You can find silk jersey for I think $30 a yard at Mood Fabrics.
