Still growling

I bought this Elna Supermatic model 722010 many years ago at a yard sale. I took it to an Elna dealer who fixed several things on it and it was running fine. I was going to use it for a back up machine, but never needed to, so it sat for 10 years unused.

I decided to pull it out and start using it, but when I pushed on the knee lever to sew it made a terrible growling noise. Thanks to the info here on PR I had a different dealer (the Elna dealer is now out of business) order and install a new motor friction pulley. They cleaned, oiled, adjusted, checked timing and tensions etc. and I picked it up yesterday. When I went to sew, it makes the same growling noise it did when I took it in.

Does anyone here know what else might be the problem? Is this thing fixable - for a reasonable price - or is it beyond repairing?

I know there are many experts here on PR, and I would really appreciate any info you can give me. Thanks in advance.
Pam

This is a common problem, and it's easily fixed — you can do it yourself. The problem is cause by a piece of rubber that becomes misshapen if it sits in one place for too long. You have to turn the balance wheel regularly to prevent this from happening. For the life of me I can't remember the name of the part exactly — the friction drive wheel?

Join the Yahoo Vintage Elna group and the people there will be glad to help you with this.

Most dealers warranty their repairs for a specified time frame. Have you contacted the dealer who did the repairs to let them know it still makes that noise?

Thank you Soolip, I will join that group - thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Yes, SewBusy63, I contacted the dealer this morning and she will talk to the tech. I have dealt with the tech before, and he's very knowledgeable and has done good work on my other machines. It's hard to believe he sent it home with me without sincerely believing it was OK. Maybe he's never worked on this machine before. I just thought before taking it back I would try to see if there's anything else I can do on my end.

So I'm off to find and join the Yahoo Vintage Elna Group. If anyone else has any input it's greatly appreciated. Thank you again.

I already replaced the motor friction pulley, and it still growls.

I went to yahoo groups and searched for "Vintage Elna" and 'Vintage Sewing Machines'. I couldn't find the Elna group listed anywhere. What am I missing?

I think it's a wheel, not a pulley.

I replaced the friction pulley in my Supermatic and the sound went away first thing. It was so loud before, there was no way I could endure it. Possibly there is another problem going on, I'd bring it back to your mechanic.

Thanks for the input. I'm terrible at describing sounds, but it's not that loud. It almost sounds more like a motorboat. The faster you sew, the louder it gets.

I'm afraid the tech is going to tell me this is normal. I don't remember it making this noise 10 years ago, but then again, that was 10 years ago, and I don't remember what I had for lunch 2 days ago, so...

Anyway, it isn't really normal for it to be making this noise, is it?
