Date: 12/20/10 10:09 AM My Bernina 730 makes a loud noise when it's starting up. It's nearly brand new - not even a month old and it's done this since the first time. Is this normal? I've never had a computerized sewing machine before so I'm not sure. I thought I'd ask.
Thanks! |

Date: 12/20/10 10:32 AM My 440 makes a "garumph" when it starts. The Yahoo forum members tells me their machines also make this sound when they are first turned on. Mine makes the sound and the needle bar shifts into position at the same time. |

Date: 12/20/10 10:35 AM Yes, totally normal. My first computerized machine, an Elna, really startled me when I first turned it on, and my Brother did this, as well as my new Bernina 730. I have to say the Bernina is the loudest - but I'm used to it now. ------ Bernina 730E, 530, and 350PE

Date: 12/20/10 10:43 AM Oh, good! I was a bit worried yesterday when I started it yet again and it made that noise. Suddenly I thought..."Oh no! There's something really wrong with it and I need to take it in!"
Thanks so much ladies! I appreciate it. |

Date: 12/20/10 3:28 PM My Brother does it, too along with an older Pfaff. It's going through a calibration of sorts, though the Brother can sound quite scary. |

Date: 12/20/10 4:48 PM Yep, the "Bernina burp." We are worried if the machine doesn't do that when we turn it on. |

Date: 12/21/10 3:47 AM The Bernina Burp is the machine lining up the needle and getting itself ready to sew. I think of it like the machine greeting me at the beginning of a sewing session. If you stop with the needle down, and turn off the machine, mine I have noticed won't do its burp until the needle is in the up position so if yours ever doesn't do the start up burp, check that before worrying. The Bernina burp is across many Bernina computerised models.
And oooooh, a 730!! Nice machine!!! ------ Quilting up a storm

Date: 12/21/10 10:15 AM It's funny how startling the sound of a computerized machine that "sets up" or calibrates itself can be! I guess my first computerized Pfaff wasn't so loud or abrupt but boy is the serger noisy!
This topic just made me recall an ad campaign Mercedes Benz did long ago, when diesel cars were coming onto the market. They were not quiet.... apparently there were complaints about the noise (don't know if this was just on start up as with our machines) so they converted that noise to a positive feature, along the lines of when you drive a MB diesel your vehicle lets you know it's running right!
