Currently, I have a Husky Viking E20 sewing machine. I have been doing projects such as hemming jeans, garment clothing with easy to follow patterns, t-shirt reconstructions, and simple jean alterations. I feel I need a machine that is more solid, durable and suitable for beyond the novice sewer. What sewing machine matches my needs?? What type of sewing machine would you recommend?

What is your budget? Once you have that established you can start looking at the machines that fall into your price range. I would seriously consider a Bernina. I have had various Janomes for 9 years and recently switched to Bernina. The Bernina's have much better piercing power than any Janome I ever owned. They go over serged/thick seams without hesitation. Also remember dealer support is very important! You want to choose a dealer who will stick with you and help you if your machine has problems.

Take the fabrics you use and try out the machines.

Be sure to try out the button holes. I think my Brother 8500 makes good buttonholes but my Pfaff 2048 doesn't and my Viking 500's werent so hot either.

Needle up/down is a great feature to have.

My budget is in the 250 to 350 range. I've been looking at overstock and ebay, but something tells me to stick with an authorized dealer just in case. Thanks for your advice. So far, I've just been doing the research..lol

That's an excellent idea. I will definitely take some jean fabric to test out the machine. Thank you:)

If you possibly could spend another 25 to 45 dollars it might be nice for you to checkout the Babylock Grace, our area is on sale now for $323 plus taxes brings it to $365 I think they had in the ad however every area has their own sale price. When I looked at it it did well with denim & has beautiful buttonholes. I have not tested it with fleece yet, but have heard from other PR members that it does well with it. It is computerized. It also has a bit of extra lift to the presser foot.
Another to consider is the cost of feet & things. As you know Vikings are pricey accessory. There are so many sm to choose from....just take your time & make sure you get one from someone you trust for servicing & your free classes.
Please keep us posted on your search.
