I just got my new Brother PC-420 and the manual says to use only Brother bobbins made specifically for this machine.

I have a good size collection of generic bobbins full of thread that seem to be exactly the same size as the four that came with the new machine, but they're metal. I even have a few that are plastic and look just like the brother ones. (All same 1/2" depth, same circumference).

I'm terrified to try an unofficial bobbin and risk breaking something. I'm also loath to special order bobbins and rewind all that thread if I don't have to.

What would you do?

As the owner of 4 Brothers ... make sure you have a bobbin that will work in a Brother machine! Either the ones sold by Brother, or the ones that specificly say they are for Brothers. Otherwise, you will have impressive thread nests ... ask how I know.

I don't really make mistakes ... I create "learning opportunities"! Murphy says: The better you match the thread to the fabric, the more likely you will need to rip some stitches out! I spend more quality time with my seamripper than I like ...
Yes, I DO love fabric!!

The PC-420 uses SA156 bobbins, which are available at WalMart or in bulk off eBay.

The Brother PC420 uses the Brother SA156 plastic bobbin which is the same as the Singer 15-J plastic bobbin. No other bobbins will work with this machine. It is NOT the same size as the 15 or 66 generic bobbins. The bobbins are not very expensive and can also be bought directly from Brother or a place like Allbrands.com

Enjoy your machine- it really sews like a dream.
