i have a question and i know that one of you fine people will be able to answer it in no time.

i have a piece of nylon and want to get a contrasting color (buying online, color wanted is not available locally). i think that what i already have is ripstop, but i want to be sure before i order. so . . . .

my question is: Is ripstop the one with the "grid" in the weave?

thanks so much for the help.

As far as I know, ripstop fabric always has a grid of some sort - squares or diamond shape - I believe it's inherent in the weave that makes it "ripstop".

Can't guarantee that what you have is ripstop fabric (there are fabrics with gridlike patterns that are not ripstop). If you try to rip it, what happens? That's a pretty good way to test it.

Last time I checked, Seattle Fabrics will send you a swatch book with 10 or so swatches in it. I think I only paid $2 or someething or it.

That's right. Ripstop fabrics are rip stop because every so often there's a thread that's stronger then the rest of them. That's usually done by using a larger diameter then the rest of them, which makes a visible pattern. Some ripstop fabrics, particularly those not mostly of nylon, use a different material for the reinforcement thread, and have a less noticeable grid.
