I am sewing Simplicity 2648. I want to do an exposed zipper down the back. How is an exposed zipper inserted?

I did a review of a dress that I altered to make use of an exposed zipper.
Review The pertinent part is where I talk about version 2- I believe that I explained how I did the zipper.

Here also is a photo of the zipper completed.

You can see it on my blog as well, the link is on the review. Hope that helps a bit- sometimes visuals are an aid. One trick I use is to pin or baste a little mockup of how I want something to look like-in this case I would use a small zipper and two small pieces of fabric about 6 inches square to represent the back sections, then try to deconstruct the steps from there.

Shoot that's one big photo! edited to make it smaller.

Thanks, Connie. This is very helpful. Thanks for the picture. I think I was making it harder than it is.

also, sewstylish did a tutorial on this that should be available if you google "sewstylish exposed zipper." i believe there is also a link to that on Gertie's New Blog for Better Sewing.

i just did an exposed zip on V8615 and it was very nearly a disaster! a fascinating learning experience and not nearly enough to turn me off to exposed zips. practice one or two so you understand how and why the seam allowances are the way they are; also, i would recommend using stitch witchery or another kind of narrow fusible interfacing (or even organza) to strengthen the opening, because i found using cut strips of fusible, as recommended by sewstylish, to be a huge problem when it came to trimming and finishing the zip.

i would recommend if you plan on doing them on multiple garments to invest in a pair of applique scissors-- i would not have gotten through the trimming on my exposed zip without the applique scissors.

I love this method on dresses with a center back seam. If it is for casual wear, I turn the seam allowance under on each side of the zipper and top stitch. I was just looking at the dresses on the Neiman Marcus web site and they had many dresses with a zipper exposed in the center back. I also, use this method on children's wear. I love to "snoop" shop to find new techniques.

I think this is the link for how to do an exposed zipper (from Sew/CraftStylish).

I'd love to try this technique on a skirt. I saw a skirt at Banana Republic a few months ago that had an exposed zipper on it, and thought I could do so much better!
