Can anyone suggest a pattern for a gored skirt w/waistband that's NOT Big4? I would especially like to try a BWOF or Ottobre design, but since I don't subscribe, I don't know what issue to buy! I saw that Lois Hines has one, but more options haven't revealed themselves to my search button... thanks in advance

Brown Paper Patterns has a pattern with a group of skirts you could look at. There is a 6-gore skirt in the group, with a waistband and zipper. Unfortunately, I am not as web savvy as some others here, so I will have to leave it up to you to Google "Brown Paper Patterns" on your own. You could also draft your own, it is not too hard of a process to make it fit well. Good Luck!

You can see all the patterns at ottobredesign.com. However, you will have to click thru to the womens patterns between the children's issues. Just click on the magazine you want to see.

The Jalie 2681 skirt (for knits) doesn't have a waistband, but you could add one... I'm 80% done with my first one, went together great and has a flattering fit when I tried it on. It has a lot of positive reviews here on PR.

There's the free Hot Patterns Bossa Nova skirt but it has an elasticized waist.

Kathryn Brenne's Travel Skirt might be the answer. It pack up like an accordian. Here's the website http://www.finesewing.com/merchandise.html

Funny - I just got finished making my own pattern for an 8 gored skirt with a waistband. But it is for a toddler.

I adapted it from a simple A-line skirt pattern. I traced the skirt pattern piece (which was half the Front/Back to be cut on a fold) flaring out the skirt and lengthening it but not altering the waist, and then divided the pattern piece into two pieces which gave me a Center Front/Back piece and a Side Front/Back piece. Then of course I cut out four of each. I stitched the four pieces of the front and the four pieces of the back together, then stitched those two pieces together at the side seam. Then sewed it to the waistband and added a ruffle at the hem. Simple!

The nice thing about the gore skirt is that the darts you normally have in a fitted, slim skirt are incorporated into the seams. You can modify your approach you used with an A-line skirt with such a skirt if you have one that fits you well. (Extend the dart so you don't have a noticeable kink in your pattern piece.) Keep the skirt fairly fitted around your hip area and then let the gores flare out at a spot of your choosing. Some gored skirts are fairly slim until below the hip, others until mid-calf, others until below the knee.
You could also check out Sandra Betzina's book No Time To Sew. It includes a pattern for an A-line gored Askirt with a waistband. Or do you consider that Big 4? I made it a couple of times, and it has a nice swoosh to it.
Burda sells individual patterns, maybe you find something there?

I recently made the Hot Patterns Bossa Nova Skirt, and really like it. It is comfortable and so easy, and I think it could easily accommodate a zipper and a waistband, with a few adjustments.
