Hi, everyone. I don't get as much chance to sew as I would like. I'm still trying to finish a simple skirt I started back in January.

However, I love reading PatternReview.com.

I was wondering if anyone is aware of any patterns that one could use to make a dress similar to the one Kate Middleton wore the day her engagement to Prince William was announced.

Coincidentally, I was a great admirer of Princess Diana's dress style. Many years ago I adapted a Vogue pattern and made a suit in cobalt blue similar to the one she wore when her engagement to Prince Charles was announced.

Thanks for any pattern suggestions.

It's a pretty dress, everyone started discussing it on this thread, they have some pattern suggestions as well.

Style Arc's Kate Dress is a drawing of a very pretty, simple wrapdress shown in an intense shade of blue. It looks like a nice pattern, but the blue color is the only thing it has in common with Kate's engagement dress.

Here and here are the relevant details of the bodice of the real thing.

Ok, I've recently become obsessed with this dress too! I googled and found a pattern I'm really interested in trying. It's on Etsy under the Historical Patterns name. It's the only thing in the shop so far and a print your own download type pattern. But from what I can tell, it's the most accurate replica. http://www.etsy.com/listing/72754109/kate-middleton-blue-engagement-dress

The fabric in the demo dress is a little stiff and I like the flow of Kate's but I might opt for something a little thicker to hold everything in! I'll tell you what's harder than finding a good pattern (The Mccalls 2010 best pattern wrap dress is another that's close enough) is finding the fabric! If anyone knows where to get a thicker slinky elegant knit, let me know!

This new simplicity dress looks quite similar (if not inspired by the original dress, the shade of blue instantly reminds you of Kate's engagement).

The Simplicity dress is the closet one I have seen. It has the slightly overlapped V neckline and waistline pleats, and most important, that tightly wrapped but smooth cummerbund that other would-be copies lack.

Some photos of Kate's dress seem to show what looks like a narrow black or dark blue waist tie continuing to the back, but I have never seen a full back view.

The Issa dress has ties caught in the side seams (as far as I can tell that's where they're attached) that can be tied in different ways. I took screencaps from the Net-a-porter website, which was selling the dress.

A couple more photos and my interpretation of the dress here; I used Simplicity 2580 (not an exact replica, more an interpretation of the look).

McCalls 5974 is also a good pattern choice. It's the one I used but I didn't head the warnings that the pattern ran a bit big. I still have to fix it but overall I'm happy with the look it gave me. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably go with the front of the Simplicity pattern and the back of the McCalls pattern. I like the look of Simplicity's pleats sewn down instead of gathered but that's just me.

The RTW version Of the Issa dress does not appear to be identical to the one Kate wore: The center front of the tie/cummerbund is different (a loop as compared to a crossover)' and in one view of the royals, you can see that seemingly darker tie in the back. I suspect that for the princess to be, Issa did some custom work.
