I have recently reviewed a top here and noted in the review that I added embellishment. I had a few people ask how it was done, so this morning I added some detail to describe how I did it.

Since then, I have noticed that someone has rated my review as needs more info

I assume that was about the lack of detail about the embellishment as I had questions about it. Is it fair that I get a bad rating because I didn't describe something that wasn't part of the pattern??

It was quite an effort to get the photos and do the review and I really believe there should be no negative ratings allowed. Doing the review is voluntary and I am happy to explain more if asked for more detail, but why would I voluntarilly spend my time taking photos and writing reviews just so that someone can tell me it is not good enough!

If you don't feel the review is up to scratch, I think it would be better to not rate it and only rate the ones you feel deserve a good rating.

Has this happened to anyone else? Do you think it is fair to tell someone their work isn't good enough, when the whole process is voluntary??

I think it was an error, pure and simple. I think it's very easy to click the wrong bubble in the Ratings field and I'd just assume that someone meant to mark it Very Helpful instead. I like your embellishment -- it really elevates a simple top into something special.

Except that to mark "needs more info" you have to comment - and I think that is so people know why you rated it NMI. Is there a clue in the comments...I never would rate a pattern review that way - that's for sure. To write any pattern review is a help that is more than a few lines.

I have read many reviews and never noticed this rating on another review. I am also pretty sure you can change your rating, so if it was made in error, I would have thought they may try to correct it.

It still makes me wonder if there is a need for negative ratings, especially if they can be made 'in error'.

Sue, I can only hope that the rating was made in error, although I once accidently hit that NMI button and I was immediately asked to write why?
Deepika introduced this comment feature to prevent accidental NMI ratings.

As I see it, reviews are "giving back" and sharing, I appreciate each and every one, no matter how short or long and the time spent in preparing the review.

I like Thumper's saying "if you can't say something nice, don't say nothin' at all"

Your top is gorgeous, thank you for sharing with us

Sue, it could have been an accident, just--as suggested--a matter of simply hitting the wrong button.

On the other hand, it could have been a sorehead or someone having a bad day and taking a nasty mood out on the handiest target. But you know your work is good, and is no way diminished if some numbskull just doesn't 'get it.'

I'm glad you posted, and so are the vast, vast majority of members who read your review.

Try not to let this one negative experience have too much weight.

I have found out it was an error and not intentional. However I still question if we need these ratings on reviews that are voluntary. I am with Vonne & Thumper on that one...

It was upsetting to think someone may have considered my review not helpful enough to rate it that way and I think it would dissuade people from writing reviews if they got that type of feed-back. Maybe I am a little thin skinned, but you do put yourself out there when you write a review. Anyway I think it is something that Deepika may want to review in the future.

I'd be happy to get rid of the review ratings. I don't think they add any value, and it's way too easy to mistakenly click the wrong thing because of how the radio buttons are laid out. I've never once chosen to read a review or ignore it based on how other people rated it. A review is a review!

I also think that many members, particularly new members, don't realise that the ratings are positive or negative or that they have any impact. I know I didn't have a clue when I first joined the site.

I can see a new member wanting to know more about how you made the beautiful embellishments on your top clicking on needs more info. Not because your review was lacking but because they thought that this was a way of asking you about it.

If the system continues as it is maybe the buttons should be laid out under each other with a brief note explanatory note next to each one.

The bad ratings can be used vindictively. I got two "needs more info" from someone who left nasty comments on two Vogue reviews that I did (I assume it was the same person doing the NMI; the comments and NMIs both came at the same time, months after I'd done the reviews). My guess it was the pattern drafter, as I'd said both patterns were poorly drafted.

My take is the 100 word minimum on reviews (granted, that's not much!) sort of takes care of NMI. If someone has a specific question, they can ask it in the comments.

There does still need to be a way to mark spam reviews so there must be SOME way to report bad reviews. But perhaps it needn't be factored into the star system.
