Date: 4/2/11 12:41 PM Just wondering who is going.
I looked at the brochure online and thought it was kind of expensive. I live a 45 minute drive away and wouldn't stay the night but even for one day it's $165 for two or three workshops, exhibit hall from 1-6 and lunch. The lunch and afternoon workshop are during the exhibit hall times. Parking is $25 per day, Fashion Show is extra $10. If you don't get your first choice of workshops and the other choices aren't that great, there goes your $$$$$. Am I too negative on this? Too bad you can't just take individual workshops. By the time you pay for dinner and spend money at the vendors...if you have time....it's a $300-$400 day.
Now the Bonaventure Hotel is gorgeous and right downtown and the whole package is probably great for those wanting to come to L.A. for vacation, but the rest of us?????
So, am I off base on this or is this just what all you guys who go to this every year just do?? |

Date: 4/2/11 12:50 PM I think these prices are the going rate for a any type of convention in a major downtown city where everything is expensive. I live about 45 minutes away as well and probably won't be spending the night, but I will be attending. ------ Visit my blog at http://sewingsaga.blogspot.com

Date: 4/2/11 12:56 PM Rose, I had the same reaction. I thought you could select your seminar sessions before committing to the purchase - is that not the case? I don't want to be on the hook for a significant fee unless I can get the sessions I'm interested in attending.
I am going to attend, because it is so close. At least I will know if I love the conference enough to consider travelling to future sites. You can avoid the parking cost by either taking the MetroLink from Santa Ana or Fullerton or driving to one of the MTA park and ride lots and taking the Metro. There is a huge lot near Memorial Hospital in Long Beach which will terminate at the 7th Metro station, about 3 blocks from the hotel.

Sherril would you be interested in sharing the ride?

Date: 4/3/11 11:28 AM I am going and so are several of my sewing buddies from ASG. We are in the Greater Seattle Chapter.
Usually there is not problem getting the classes you like if you register in a timely manner. Some classes are longer than others. There are also free demos and good vendors.
I have been the the ASG Conventions in Portland, Sacremento and Albuqueque and really loved them. Also like the sightseeing in other cities.. and fabric shopping.
Is it worth it? I think so but only if you can afford it. Its an opportunity to learn from some teachers you don't see everday such as Cynthia Guffey. And an opportunity to be inspired by other ASG members.

Date: 4/3/11 3:28 PM I am going! I live in the LA basin so for me the sewing world is knocking on my back door. I'd like to stay at the hotel, but won't be able to so I am going to treat this as a mini-vacation - attending to sewing seminars; no meal planning for breakfast or lunch; being inspired by fellow garment sewers and - best of all - I can come home and sleep in my own bed at night! ------ Kemish |

Date: 4/6/11 5:41 PM I'm going! I registered online yesterday. There are some interesting classes, I think. I'm taking an all day class w/ June Colburn on Decolourant & an all day class on Friday caled Painting Pizzazz that's all about using different mediums to print on fabrics. I'm also going on the LA Evening Tour on Saturday night. -- Edited on 4/6/11 5:41 PM -- |

Date: 4/6/11 8:38 PM Barbara, from what I've heard, the ASG conference focuses on education with longer classes. The vendor floor is not supposed to be as extensive as Puyallup. Louise Cutting is bringing fabric to ASG though and that's tempting.
After looking at the schedule, I'm cancelling my hotel reservations. Sadly and amazingly, I didn't see anything that just tickled my fancy. I'm sure I'll be sorry I didn't attend so those who go need to write some great reviews of the event. ------ Patti
