Date: 4/12/11 12:54 PM Okay, serves me right for hitting buy it now in a fit of exuberance on Ebay.
Today my machine arrived and its got problems. Probably not terminal but will be costly all the same.
There seems to be two problems with the machine;
1. The foot pedal or power to the machine seems to be playing up. I have to depress the pedal almost completely to get the machine to go and then it will run really fast. If I try to go slow and press a little bit it sometimes will sew a few stitches but then slows and stops.
It seems to be unable to consistently sew at anything other than full pelt.
2. The straight stitching on the machine doesn't seem very straight. I have tried different sizes of zigzag out and the machine seems to vary the stitch length of the zigzag by itself and does not sew a consistent zigzag stitch.
I am assuming there are two things that would need to be fixed, a new foot pedal/power lead and a service on the machine to fix the feeding issues.
I have emailed the seller to see what they want to do.
It will cost me as much as I paid for the machine to get it fixed. I'm hoping to return it for a refund.

Quote: Thank you for your message and I am sorry that you are having problems with the sewing machine. It was fully tested before listing and dispatch. The only thing I can suggest is that you return the machine for a refund.
Yeah right, tested by an idot I think.
I will be packing it up and sending it back.
Any tips anyone on returning a faulty item on Ebay.?------ My machines; Bernina 135S, Brother FS-40, Elna 2300, Bernina Serger 800DL.

Any tips anyone on returning a faulty item on Ebay.? Well, before packing it up, you might check that the machine has been oiled and brushed free of lint. You can also look inside the foot controller to see whether there's any build up of corrosion (easily removed with sandpaper) or dirt to make the controller not work. The latter aren't very complicated.
A lot of sellers don't know ANYTHING about sewing machines, so if things APPEAR to work, that's good enough for them.
In this case, a few minutes spent looking into the issue might save you the hassle of dealing with the seller.
Otherwise, I'd take a photo of how the machine was shipped (or its packing if you still have it), and use the exact same materials to return it.

Date: 4/12/11 3:24 PM Thanks for the reply.
Any machine I get the first thing I do is hoover out and brush out dust and oil up. This one had a lot of pink fluff in the bobbin area.
Shame it seems a cute little machine. I also liked the fact it has a pop out stitch plate and a straight stitch one that pops in.

Date: 4/12/11 3:43 PM For the feeding problem, check if the presser foot pressure button is pushed in all the way. When I got my vintage Kenmore I thought it was having a problem, but pressing the button solved it. |

Date: 4/12/11 4:04 PM The foot pressure is on a dial on the inside I think next to the bulb it is set to 2 currently. It goes between 0 for darning to 4. The manual doesn't really give an indication of what number for which fabric except a higher number for light fabrics.

Date: 4/12/11 4:09 PM I just get a feeling about this machine that it should go back.
When I got it the tension was on 1 and the feed dogs were down.
So it didn't sew at all well. I set the tension to 5 and clicked up the feed dogs and it sewed. I'd love to know how this was tested with the tension to 1 and feed dogs down?
I am off to bed as its late here.
My small daughter has already been up twice with bad dreams about loud music, I think I will be having bad sewing machine dreams!!
