Hi everyone. I'm new here and hoping for some help. I'm new to quilting and want to purchase a new machine. I don't really enjoy embroidery, but some of the applique stitches interest me. I think I've decided on either the BL symphony or the Pfaff quilt expression 4.0.

It looks like there are a lot of concerns about the Pfaff and not so many about the BL, but I wanted to ask one more time before I make my choice. So please, if you have any input, speak up!

Thanks in advance from someone who really appreciates your help!

I ordered the pfaff 4.0 today. I regret selling my pfaff cv. There is nothing like dual feed. The 4.0 received good housekeeping best buy award. The man that repairs machines recommended this one over others. I have an ellisimo and am disappointed in various sewing features. I also looked at Symphony and did not feel decorative stitches were as good as pfaff.

Muffin, were you concerned by the negative comments about the Pfaff 4.0? I'm hoping maybe the problems with it have been resolved since some of the reviews were from 2009 and 2010.

I tried winding the bobbin, threading and scissor cutting and all seem much improved over my previous expiences with the pfaff cv and original models as you said in 2009.

Muffin, I'm just curious about your experience with the Ellisimo's sewing features that fell short of expectations. I can say this would be a tough choice for me bc the Symphony has so many cool features and i did like the auto pivot function when I had it on my Viking. The Pfaff does have the dual feed though. So i can understand liking that feature.

Welcome! Have you had an opportunity to really demo the 4.0? If you have reservations based on the earlier reviews, I don't blame you bc some of them were really quite awful but I've noticed more favorable reviews in recent months and also same for the Viking Sapphires ending in "5" (735, 755 and 775) and I have read the kinks are out of the Viking models if you buy one of the new models. The expression and sapphire lines are very similar and both under SVP ownership now. My feeling is that if the sapphires are fixed, the expression line probably is also. At the same time, I'd be interested in hearing a bit more reassurance from users as well. The 4.0 looks to be a fantastic machine and I almost bought it a few years ago...until i read those reviews!! I also sewed on one that was just not right and same for the sister sapphire. I haven't gone back to test them again but I definitely would if i were in the market and would probably choose the 4.0 as i think the dec stitches look more like ones I'd actually use. Let us know what you decide!! Its a tough decision bc the Symphony as sooo many neat features...just no IDF.

I looked at both machines quite a bit. I didn't use them myself but the dealers showed me how to use many of the features and both machines worked well when they demonstrated them. I think I like the decorative stitching on the Pfaff better, but the reviews have me worried. If not for that, I think I'd choose the Pfaff.

Don't be too worried about the pfaff. By now they should've fixed most if not all the problem. They're great machines. I am upgrading this year and am shopping around and pfaff quilt expression 4.0 is on my deciding list. Have looked at other machines in your area?

The Ellisimo has an excellent threading system and bobbin winding but I don't like the feet and the control you have with them as on a pfaff. With the pfaff dual feed I rarely use pins. Also the walking foot and free motion feet that came with machine did not work well so I ended up buying more expensive versions.

Well, I agree. Hopefully someone will come along that has more info on the newest 4.0's. Though i do love the maxi-stitches on the Brother and the pivot feature. I haven't inspected all the decorative stitches on the Symphony, but the pfaff has some "antique-ish" looking ones that i like quite a lot. As a quilter, I'd recommend testing the 1/4" seaming to be sure that goes smoothly and you're happy with the straight-stitch bc the wider feed-dogs may or may not cause the ss to be slightly SLIGHTLY off. Also, ask if the 4.0 has a metal hook (they were using plastic in some models as recently as 2 years ago). Then see if you can FM on your own sample from home so you can see how that goes. Then report back to me
