I was at my local Babylock dealer today and she was saying that as of May 1st, Babylock is having quite a significant price increase. She said she was going to place a large machine order this coming week before it applies. Just an FYI in case anyone is looking a buying a Babylock...

Because they are made in Japan...and I think you know what happened there recently...besides the dollar is worthless...but don't tell anyone, it's supposed to be a secret.

Is this Babylock USA or worldwide? I ask because Babylocks in the US have been significantly cheaper than elsewhere in the world. I'm wondering if with your dollar it's in the US only.

Yes, she did mention Japan. As far as worldwide or just US, I'm not sure. She didn't go into much more detail. I did buy an Enlighten serger recently though, and she did say that it's probably going up by $150. Another example she gave was the Symphony which she is raising by $200.

I heard the same thing from my dealer--I bought an Evolution last Monday--first new serger in over 15 years. My dealers was also offering a double-tax discount and 0% financing for 6 months. I thought the price increase was because new models were coming out, but the aftermath of the quake makes sense.

I'm not sure this is related to the earthquake. My Babylock was made in Taiwan, but then it's an odd model. Babylocks are mostly made by Brother, so if Brothers aren't experiencing a price increase, then it's not likely to be an issue at the production level.

I know that the Enlighten and Evolution sergers are made in Japan. I'm not sure about their other sergers. But I thought about that also when she said about Japan, that most of their sewing machines are probably not made there. Well, regardless the reason, they are going up!

I had gotten an email from sewingmachinesplus:

Just an update on current factory conditions in Japan. The Presidents of BabyLock and Brother have just let us know that the factories were not damaged by the earthquake. But, because of this tragedy and the loss of fuel, shipping and manufacturing prices will be higher.

Sooo...we are getting a very large price increase on MAY 1st. Product availability is still good, but we do not know what the future will bring. With that in mind, we urge you to buy before the increase.

I'm not surprised. Even if the machines themselves aren't manufactured there, certainly some components must be. There are lots of Japanese cars manufactured in the USA, but the components still have to be shipped from Japan. Same is true of American automobile manufacturers. Complicated world.
