Date: 4/30/11 11:01 PM I visited a local JoAnn's to pick up a couple of sale patterns. A significant number (maybe 25% of the total) of Vogue had their cards turned up displaying the pink end, indicating they are being discontinued and will not be re-ordered. There were some old ones but also most of the new spring and summer selections. In addition, most patterns had only one of each size envelope. Same for Butterick. The Vogue files are down to two lateral cabinets; the Butterick one, while Simplicity and McCall occupy a huge amount of real estate. I asked, but the sales clerk had no idea what was up. Any idea? Are Vogue and Butterick being de-emphasized? Are they getting rid of designer selections to cut costs? Very curious about this. ------ wino |

Date: 5/1/11 1:10 AM I was at my nearest Joann's today, and was surprised to see the same thing in the Vogue cabinet (didn't look in Butterick). No idea what it means. |

Date: 5/1/11 1:54 AM My local JoAnn's has always had about one copy of the Vogue's in each size. I think the reason for the Simplicity increase is that J's features the Simplicity patterns in their magazine..some sort of partnership...I don't know about the early dropping of the patterns just released..that is upsetting..it takes me a while sometimes, to decide if I want a pattern... ------ 2009-113.25 yds

2012 86.3 yds..

Date: 5/1/11 9:07 AM Same thing at our JoAnns. They had a small Vogue catalog featuring some of the patterns with JoAnns fabrics besides the regular Vogue catalog.
I'm not buying patterns this year unless they are really unique and after the wedding I thought I might try some of those dress hat patterns. |

Date: 5/1/11 9:31 AM Me too ! I picked up the one with the 30-40's hats. The royal wedding was inspirational...not that I have anywhere to wear such things. ------ wino |

Date: 5/1/11 10:58 AM McCall Patterns has just been purchased by Conso . I'm not sure what this means because there's nothing out there about it, but it seems to have been in the works for a few years. On the other hand, they are advertising for pattern drafters on their website.
Edited to add: This is the company that already owns Simplicity. So the big 4 is now the big 1. -- Edited on 5/1/11 11:00 AM -- ------ Marilyn

Subject: Whats Up with Vogue and Butterick? Date: 5/1/11 11:19 AM Interesting. I saw the cards at Joann's yesterday but there were a few of each, probably 2 of each size.

Date: 5/1/11 11:34 AM It appears that Conso tried to purchase The McCall Company in 2000. The FTC filed for an injunction to stop it, arguing (basically) monopoly. It appears that the purchase was withdrawn after the FTC filed in federal court, however I cannot find anything that has happened since then. I think this purchase never ended up happening and the few places that show Conso as the owner are incorrect.
One interesting thing I did find in the FTC's complaint is that in 2000, Simplicity had a market share of 45% and McCall (all three brands together) had only 31.5%. Definitely not what I would have expected.

Date: 5/1/11 12:42 PM I may have to find someplace to wear one if it turns out well. But I thought I'd like to know what goes into making one and what styles look good on me. Maybe there is a hatmaker nearby that I don't know about and I can save some money if I pretty much know what would work for me.
I know several of Donna Reed's friends (the old Donna Reed show), made their hats so it was common in the 50's for ladies to give it a go. |
