okay, I'm considering some of wild gingers software, or another brand.

now - my issues aren't with taping paper together.

my issue is: are the results any good? did the pattern fit you when you made it?

anybody?

The wild ginger software does make patterns that will fit better than what you can buy from the "big 4" pattern companies. It is particularly good for people who are outside the usual size ranges. You do need patience to get the measurements done (better by someone else than yourself). Then, you make a muslin complete with zipper and sleeves to check the fit.
It helps to have someone take photos of your muslin from front, side, and back, then send the photos to WG's tech. support person, who will check the fit for you and make suggestions.
Not a quick and easy solution to fit, but it does work pretty well if you follow their directions and have patience.
Hope this helps you!!

I've been a WG customer for years and like their products a great deal. I recommend them, but it requires some doing to use them correctly. It is highly unlikely, but not impossible, that your very first project will look and fit great.

Two main things you'll want to keep in mind:
1. When you first get started, work very closely with Karen, one of the two founders. Her advice is generous, free and priceless. The program will ask you to input your measurements. Do that and then send the chart to Karen. She will be able to spot errors and make some adjustments. DO what she says. Then sew a sample garment, a so-called sloper, as instructed by the program, take front, back and profile pictures of you wearing it and send those to Karen. DO what she suggests. The biggest mistake WG newbies make is trying to master the program based on their experiences with computers, engineering, patternmaking, etc., and not ask the company owners and WG users for feedback.
2. Fitting and designing are two different animals. You may produce a great-fitting, but dowdy-looking garment. Bear in mind that commercial patterns have been tested and fine-tuned repeatedly before they hit the market. You probably won't do the same, but of course, you become more experienced as you work with WG. A lot of WG users combine WG and commercial patterns or RTW styles. They draft their basic silhouette with WG but look to professionally made fashion for design guidance. For example, I wanted to make a gored skirt with little godets just like I had seen in a Burda magazine. I made the gored skirt in WG and knew it would fit me perfectly, but traced the godets from the actual Burda pattern, and taped those to my skirt pieces. That worked very well and eliminated the guess work for me about how big and flared I wanted the godets to be had I drafted them in WG.

There is a 60 (90?) day return policy if you don't like the products.

Enjoy.

Claudia

I have used the Wild products for years and am very satisified.
Great customer support.

If you go to the website, look in community forums. There are photo albums as well as discussions.

If you buy the software you will have access to the private discussions.

You can also play with the software before buying it.
After you buy it, you can get a refund withing a certain time period if you don't like it.

Right now I am using the Knits Program and love the results.

Yes, the program settings will let you adjust for those. Karen can advise you what to do.

Seconding everything said from the other users with an emphasis on patience.
Like SewSally I also use the new Knits program and really like it.
I'd been trying to pattern for knits in Patternmaster Boutique by tweaking in the CAD editor, but the knits program is much easier and has many of the same styles as PMB.

I'm a long time user of many of Wild Ginger's products and I'm very happy with all their prodcuts. I've made lots of successful garments with their software that fit exceptionally well. I'd highy recommend their software. Probably the best on the domestic, home sewing market IMHO.

This said Caludia hit the nail on the head when she said, "Fitting and designing are two different animals."

You need to have realistic expectations when you purchase this software. This is not pattern making or pattern fitting software. This is pattern drafting software. Even though you can select options with a click of the mouse, you are drafting a pattern completely from scratch, and any pattern drafting takes time because you are designing a garment from scratch.

With some help from Karen Campbell (WG employee) you will be able to get a good fit pretty quickly. However, fit isn't everything. Design is a huge part of the process of creating a pattern too and something we all take for granted when purchasing a commercial pattern. Design takes a lot of effort, time and there is a long learning curve. You will still need to sew muslins and test garments every time you create a pattern.

You need to be patient and be prepared for a long learning curve if you purchase this software. Yes you will get excellent fit results but be aware the design side, if you have no previous experience, takes time to learn. HTH
