Hi all! I'll be managing the Sewing for Children contest this year. The start date is just around the corner (July 1), so time to start planning all the cuteness! We'll have the contest open for entry shortly. The rules are the same as last year, but I'm not sure about the prizes yet. I'll let y'all know as soon as I find out.

Sewing for Children
July 1 through August 31, 2011

This contest is a chance to sew something wonderful - a garment, home decor, or craft item, as long as it's sewn -- for a baby or a child (your own or someone else's, including items sewn for charity).

For the purposes of this contest, a child is a human from newborn to age 12, elementary school age (That would be up to and including grade 6), and who still fit into children's sizing. This contest is to showcase your items that are sewn for children, children's styles, children's sizes. If your child has matured and is into misses sizes then consider saving your contest sewing for a different contest. All patterns should be baby or children's sizing.

The rules for this contest:
1) Sew a garment, home decor item or craft intended for wear or use by a child (see definition above) or for decorating a baby's or child's room. Doll clothing is not included in this contest unless sewn along with a matching child's outfit.

2) Items may be based on commercial, free public-use or self-drafted patterns. Patterns may be new, never sewn before, or TNT.

3) The contest period runs July 1 - August 31, 2011. Submitted item must be started on or after July 1 2011 and completed and reviewed by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on August 31, 2011.

Patterns may be drafted, tweaked, and muslined before the contest date, but fabric for the pieces entered may not be laid out or cut till the start date of the contest (July 1). Fabric may be pretreated before the contest date.

4) More than one item can be entered in the contest.

5) Final products may be pictured on a dress form, worn by the garment's intended owner, or photographed in situ. Please consult with the contest moderator if none of these alternatives is feasible for you.

The winner will be decided by member vote. There will also be a random drawing winner from all eligible entries.

Prizes
Sponsored by sewitup.com

First Prize: $100 Gift Certificate
Random Entry Prize: $75 Gift Certificate

*Rules that apply to all contests:

1. All reviews must be entered for submission by 11:59 PM Eastern Time on the last day of the contest. Contest dates will be listed for each contest.

2. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, patterns may be drafted, tweaked, and muslined before the contest date, but fabric for the pieces entered may not be laid out or cut till the start date of the contest. Fabric may be pretreated before the contest date.

3. Items intended for sale, or for which you were or will be paid to make, do not qualify for any contest, but items made for charity are welcome!

4. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, all reviews written for a contest entry must include a picture of the entry.

Thank you Ladybegood for managing this contest!
This is the biggest contest for me this year. I participate in a lot of contests, but I really have plans for this one.

My 4yo daughter is growing like a little weed, and needs just about everything. I have plans to make 2 pairs of overalls from an old pattern (one long pants, one shorts). Then this Daisy Kingdom top and capri pants:

Also possibly a jacket/pant combo, and PJ's too if I have time, but those can wait.
Lastly, I want to make this beautiful Asian style dress (the one on the right). I already have the most gorgeous sky blue and lavender brocade.

That last is my big one that I plan to put a ton of effort into.

The next few months I plan to sew mostly for her, with just a few tops thrown in for myself next month if I can fit them in. :)
Looking forward to getting started soon!

I am pretty sure I'm not going to enter this but just in case... it says no doll clothes, but are dolls/toys eligible?

This is what I've been saving the Pooh dress for. Have an 80s pattern (it's cute), pink Pooh fabric, and some vintage pewter Pooh buttons and lots of pink cord. And matching bows to go with it.

Ah, Katie. You stumped me on day one. I had to check with the contest managers on this one since I couldn't find any precedent. The rules say craft patterns are OK, but its a fine line between dolls and doll clothes, isn't it? Perhaps if you let me know what you were planning to sew...

Aroura, you must have the sharpest kids around! Between the vintage contest and this one your darlings are going to end up with all kinds of adorable!

BrightFeather, the outfit sounds darling. Can't wait to see the pewter buttons.

Perfect timing -- I have a brand new grand-daughter (little over a month old) and I've been itching to sew something for her. Now to go through all the patterns I've been saving waiting for a grand-daughter (5 grand-sons came first).

She's already a big girl (9 lbs at birth) -- this is going to be so much fun.

I guess I should do something for the boys as well -- there's a jean jacket in a Burda magazine from a few months ago that I've been wanting to try. This might be a good opportunity.

Looking forward to seeing all the gorgeous kids clothes. Aroura those patterns are adorable -- can't wait to see the finished projects.

I have a vintage Raggedy Ann/Andy pattern that is just dying to be made. I would probably include clothes but it wouldn't be just clothes.

Yay! I was watching for this thread. My son really needs a new raincoat. I'm hoping to be able to make him one for this contest.

He also wants one of those pajama pal things. Would that qualify for this contest?

I think I will enter this one! I have a 4 year old who I LOVE to sew for. So I might make her a dress (maybe I'll buy one of those Oliver K dresses I've been eyeing or finally make something from my Ottobre magazine!!!)...or maybe a dress up princess dress/costume...need to look through my patterns! This will get me going!
