It hit me just now that it's been exactly four years since I joined Pattern Review. I still remember how this happened:

In maybe May or June of 2007 I had rediscovered my stash of fabric and patterns in a container in a storage unit I used to have. This got me really thinking about sewing again. In July of that year, my daughter was away in Quebec doing a summer program, so I asked her if she'd like me to sew something for her. No doubt I figured it would be easier and, um, less emotional to sew for a 17-year-old (which she was then) than to sew for middle-aged me, but I guess I also wanted to share my excitement. She looked through some patterns online and gave me her wish list.

Somewhere in all this process I ended up on a website (perhaps the Fabricland Canada website?) that had a list of online sewing resources. One of the resources was Pattern Review. The next thing I knew, I was spending ridiculous amounts of time on here. Oh, and I did some sewing that summer, too. Nothing very successful, but it was a start -- or really more like a restart, since I used to sew quite a bit years ago.

So... share your stories -- what led up to your own discovery of Pattern Review?

What a wonderful thread Joan.. should be interesting fun read..

I joined PR after coming here so many times to read machines reviews.. What I DON'T remember is why I was buying another sewing machine.. Much like you.. the site kept popping up as a source for machine reviews..

Then after reading the boards out of boredom one day.. the ladies seemed to be an interesting bunch.. and I wanted to post/chat with a few of them.. Also felt I knew some information that might be helpful... And you know I love to talk machines..

And so I joined.. I don't remember how long it took me to find the courage to make my first post.. but have been a faithful poster ever since.. much to the chagrin of some..

Good story! Thanks for sharing that. It does make sense that it was sewing machines that drew you here, lol.

More stories?

So it looks like I just missed my 4th PR anniversary; it was on Wednesday. No earthly idea how I ended up here, though.

It's so funny to me that you posted this thread, because I was literally just wondering about this yesterday (how people end up on PR, not that it's your anniversary. Congrats though!). I mention PR to random people at the fabric store all the time, and wonder if they ever end up checking it out :)

My story: I wanted to make some stuffed chairs for my nieces and the pattern allowed you to make the pillows for the inside or you could buy them. When I went to look up the vendor information, I found they weren't available. But I did find PR instead. I mainly sewed crafts and Halloween costumes until that point. Seeing the garments others made and having a new daughter to sew for helped me branch out. Now sewing feeds my interest in PR, which feeds my interest in sewing, and the circle keeps going!

I've been on here so long I don't how or why I found it! I vaguely remember (which is the way I remember most things!) researching something about sewing...

It's actually Marcy Tilton's fault that I am here. A friend and I were shopping at one of her open studio days, and when she found out I was returning to sewing, she said I must visit this site. The rest, as we say, is history. BTW, MT's studio is very interesting-it is tucked away in a rural part of southern Oregon, back behind a house, on a country road. I have visited it a few times and I always feel as though I am stepping back into the early 70's. Steve Miller, Jackson Browne - that genre of music come to mind

I'm not sure when I started (I'll have to look at my "member since" date after I post this!) but I clearly remember how...and you can probably still find my first post if you search on "confetti dot fabric" LOL. I was about to throw my machine out a window and myself after it, trying to sew a top out of that @#$%^ stuff, and somehow I came upon this site. Not only did I get great advice, I got sucked into sewing on a regular basis and now I can't stop.

Hello, my name is Pinky, and I'm a sewing addict...

edit: Wow, 5 years!

A piece of lime green linen/tencel brought me here like a magic carpet ride. I was shopping for quilting fabric and couldn't put down this springy fabric with such a nice hand....

At home I realized I hadn't sewn clothing since my 18 yo was in kindergarten. I perused the internet for ideas and the rest is history.

My friends and co-workers who used to sew all say, "I quit because it's too expensive and nothing I made ever fit." I am shouting from the rooftops about all of the help I've received from PR.

My one year as a PR member has taught me more about sewing, and many other things, than my 4 year education in home economics and 39 years of practicing this craft.

Thanks to Deepika and all of you.
