Date: 7/22/11 7:47 PM I went downtown today and popped into Mike's Fabrics to show Erika what I'd made with some fabric I'd recently bought, only to find a closeout sale! Erika says her husband has been recovering from open-heart surgery, and she finally made the decision to close the store after 30 years. She'll probably be open for a few more days, but there is not much left (what is left is going for $1/yd though!). She says she will be working 3 days a week at the Hawaiian fabric store just a few doors down, so if you can't make it to Mike's before they close, then be sure to pop by the Hawaiian store to say hi. Sigh... I sure am going to miss that store! ------ "Creativity is the residue of time wasted." Albert Einstein.

Date: 8/14/11 5:03 PM I just started sewing clothing so I don't know mikes, but it's a very sad reason to have to close a store in any case.
Are there many LA sewers around here? Would love to know if there are any more beginners I could share tips with IRL. ------ BrownPaperPattern.blogspot.com |

Date: 8/16/11 10:18 AM I've only gone downtown once for fabric, but that is sad that a store closed. The fabric store here in the local mall just closed as well. :(
Ms. McCall-I know that there have been a few LA sewing gatherings, mostly downtown shopping I think and someday I'll get to one, but in the meantime, there is this new sewing group on meetup.com that I'm going to meet tonight. It's kinda far from me, but I too would really like to meet some other sewers in person. There's a meet and greet on Friday night too.
Is anyone on patternreview in this group? (sorry to derail, perhaps I should start a new topic?)

Date: 8/22/11 0:14 AM Sky, are you referring to the Sally's Fabric that closed in the Fox Hills Mall? That was sad cause there are not too many fabric stores left outside of downtown or Joanns. ------ "Creativity is the residue of time wasted." Albert Einstein.

Date: 8/22/11 0:32 AM I am referring to Sally's. I didn't go too often as I have a massive stash, but I really liked having an independent fabric store in the mall. (Actually, I dislike malls and would usually only go there in order to go the Sally's. I just thought it was cool to have a fabric store in such a mainstream place.) |
