I signed up for Gerties bombshell dress class at Craftsy. I didn't intend to make the dress, I just like to read or watch anything I can about sewing. ( I know I need to get a life ) It looks like so much fun to make and I haven't used spiral boning yet, so now I want to make the dress. The problem is I am over 40, so I doubt I would ever wear it. I could just make it into a top and maybe wear it with a cute cardigan sweater. I could just make it out of cheap fabric BUT I do have some very pretty Japanese cotton that would be perfect for this. Why do I obsess about the stupidest little things? BTW- Gertie does a good job with this course, I enjoyed watching it.

I am 39 and am totally making that dressI don't see this as a particularly "young" style. You could also make a little jacket to wear over it.

The course is fantastic :)

I signed up for the course too! Don't let the over 40 thing get to you (I'm over 50). I want to make the yellow dress version - it's got sort of a 'modesty' panel thing going on at the top. It's incredibly cute and the panel makes it a bit more restrained.

Thanks Ladies! I think I will make the dress. I like the yellow dress too! I am at an awkward stage in life where how I feel, how I think I look and what I would like to wear don't always mesh. I appreciate your advice.

If I want to try something that may not be age appropriate, I make it for a stay-in dinner date with DH.

He often enjoys my little experiments!

Haven't I seen Bet Middler in something like this at 60? We can't live in mumus and housecoats from 39 to 90 whatever. Use your Japanese cotton and enjoy it. Wear a shrug if you need to keep your shoulders warm.

Have fun.

Okay, I showed the dress to my husband, he thinks there should be a minimum age requirement on the dress

Honestly, we've been watching some of the Lucille Ball movies on today's 100th birthday tribute on TCM. The clothing is great and just verifies that this is an ageless dress for ageless women.

Maybe if you watch the original Parent Trap movie from Disney you'll have a different view. I'm 50 and when I get to goal weight one of those is going to be mine along with the petticoat to go with it. I'm not doing it now because I don't want to have to alter it later.

You only live once, and who cares what people are saying about you. It's what you are saying about yourself that's important. Those dresses say I'm fun, interesting, and not afraid to be myself.
I see those as all good things.

Thanks for asking this question. I got an email on this class and was wondering the same thing.

I enjoyed the comments on this thread. So, I may rethink my decision on buying this class.

Sorry, I don't know how to post a pic of this. Here is a link (hopefully) to the class preview - www.craftsy.com/class/gift/29 . This is a great class, even though I am familiar with most of the techniques, I still learned a few things and it was very enjoyable to watch. I'm sure anyone who takes it will be pleased they did and will get something out of it. Thanks again to everyone for your comments, I now look forward to making the dress. I should probably be more thankful for the positive aspects I possess rather than nitpicking about the negative and being insecure. In the end, I will at least have more sewing experience under my belt even if I don't wear the dress much.
