Hello all, I'm looking for an embroidery software that will help me to keep my embroidery designs organized and easy to find. What are you all using?

I have Designer's Gallery only because it came with my EM.

I recently purchased Embrilliance Thumbnailer so I can view the designs with Windows documents. It is a very inexpensive program.

The lowest price I have found is $39.95. Ann The Gran has the option of cd (free shipping) or downloand.

You can set up your own organizing system with windows folders. Also that makes it independent of any program and easy to back up as data files. For example under my documents, create a folder

my documents>embroidery designs>animals>horses. You can nest folders inside of folders until the cows come home. You can organize any way your want. I have my divided by purchased and free and then un purchased I have them divided by from where. Since I only purchased designs from a few sites it's not that bad. I recentlly make a masterfile combining everything by type, animals, flowers etc and many subcatagories under them. And this is free it just takes some time to set up.

I do what Sewwolf does. The best part is that you can take it all with you. If you copy it all to a USB drive or a CD, you can take it with you and open it on any Windows-based computer. You know, in case your computer needs to be replaced. Plus, you don't have to worry about a new program (in other words, it's free). And it's all searchable by the Windows search feature if you name your designs or give them properties.

You can start with large categories, then create smaller categories as needed and just move your designs to the appropriate folder. For example, if you start with a folder named "Animals" then find out that you have a large amount of dog designs, you can create a folder named "dogs" inside your Animals folder and just move your dog designs there.

Same here. From what I've heard, sometimes the organizing software can be limiting. I like doing it myself. Then again, I have masochistic tendencies,

The catalog software allows you to see what you are organizing.

The files remain where you decide to store them, either a folder on the hard drive, a cd or usb stick.

Here's what I'd do on an Apple Mac:

  • Download and install StitchBuddy-QL, a free Quick Look plugin to preview embroideries. This plugin shows embroidery designs as icons in the Finder of Mac OS X.
  • Download and install StitchBuddy-MD, a free Spotlight plugin to search for embroideries. This plugin allows you to create smart folders based on embroideries' attributes: dimension, stitch and color count.
  • Then you can use the Spotlight comments of each file to enter some keywords about its content, e. g. "flower", "heart", "butterfly" (press + "i" to get the information dialog) ... I haven't done this yet as it's a serious effort for several hundred (or more) designs and I found the attributes provided by StitchBuddy-MD sufficient. Now you can search with Spotlight for all designs e. g. with flowers, a size of max. 40 mm x 50 mm and 2 colors (or whatever you like), and all matching files are shown with their designs as icons. Here is an example screenshot.
  • Last but not least you can create smart folders for your most common searches. I'd suggest at least one, listing all designs regardless of their location: Just use the criteria "Embroidery color is greater than 0" and all embroideries are shown in one window. Here is a YouTube video how to achieve this.
