I don't know whether I'm blessed or cursed. There's a Joann's within walking distance. And I don't mean "brisk hike" distance, either. I mean "it's 10 minutes to closing, and I need a spool of thread" distance.

Well, I must tell you, it's 3/4 crafts now. And tons of fleece for non-sewers, even in 100-degree Texas (where I have relatives.) I rarely find apparel fabric I want to sew here in a Superstore.

I do prefer to check out one of their older small stores when in FW. It seems they have more of a sewing staff and carry more fabric than the craft ones, and maybe get in markdowns from other locations.

They have lots of quilting cottons, expensive upholstery/drapery, many bridal/prom type fabrics. At least here, the un-appealing Redline markdowns remain on the shelves for 6 months without going lower than $5. I was just there for cord for my GD's fall jumpers and it's 12.99. They have no pretty knits, no dress fabrics like rayon or challis, so I order online mainly.

Our staff is unhappy and loves to yell, "Stay behind the line until you are called!" and you'd better "take a number" to get your fabric cut.
I prefer the ambiance of our Hancock's, but I fear it's going to go out, as it's not busy, and again 5 rows of fleece + tables full......

I think you'll be happy with the convenience. It's great to have a place to "run in" and get what you need. Except the check-out line is usually pretty long.

Hah, our new Joanns is like this too. My favorite is when no one's at the counter, you walk up, and you STILL have to take a number. Then they announce that they're serving you over the loudspeaker for all the people who are concerned I guess...? I've honestly heard nothing but complaints about them lately... Someone in corporate headquarters needs a swift kick in the head it seems.

But I can't get invisible zippers anywhere else, so I guess they're still handy

I left Joann's headquarters a message last night. I told them of "our" concerns in the fabric selections and prices. I suggested they cut back on the fleece, lower the Red Tag to a real deal, keep crafts at a minimum and put in some t-knits and ITY knits. Most of what they offer in knits is solids. Most are too heavy to do justice to the patterns that are out there. The only prints are for children. I'm very lucky that my Joanns is not unpleasant to visit. I've been going there for so many years, I know most of the workers. I do know that if you contact headquarters and complain about the service, etc. and list the address of the store, it does get back to them...I made real sure they knew that I was happy with my store workers.

Right, I really think there are no sewists employed in management and they switched to competing with Michael's.

The clerk told me corporate requires these strange rules--I had the same "take a #" thing happen to me! And I've had to argue with them over coupons all the time.
Don't go on a weekend either, they don't add staff.

If they listened to customers, there wouldn't be tons of fleece anywhere in the summer, and only in the south around Christmas time.
I couldn't find anything light I wanted to sew for summer-no lawns, soft knits, light linen, challis.

**Does anyone know if corporate orders in bulk lots and thus gets stuck with those awful thin meshes, ghastly greys, and un-sewable
slippery bolts in Redline, when they should have some nice-sized apparel remnants at good prices like Hancock's drapery tables?? I remember the old days of NW Fabrics when you got tables of those.

Those I see shopping are into beading and scrapbooking, and there are 4 other locations for that. The fabric buyers are quilting, non-sewers who tie fleece, and prom-time buyers.

I'm waiting to see if more WM's come back here. I had some good luck there with kids fabric, nice stretch denim, ribbing--of course the bolts usually say "unidentified content" so you have to dig.....

I'm glad you'll be able to run in for this, that and the other. I hope it will be laid out differently than the new store by us. First, it wouldn't be safe at all for making a quick run at closing time, there is no relation to the inside of the store and the parking lot. And frankly, with ours being in a slow area of the center, it wouldn't really be safe if there are just a couple of customers. Inside the aisles are laid out like a weird old grocery store. The fabric aisles are all like the extra tall discount holders in the back of the old store. You can't glance from one fabric section to another, the lighting is bad.................. You can't keep your eye on the cutting table or the check out line. Okay, laid out more like a big old drugstore that added in some tall aisles of groceries. Still, it's going to be a big help to you when you are crunching out projects on a deadline. I think I'll contact JoAnn's too and ask why they are working so hard to get us to buy fabric on line.
