Greetings from the fabric oasis of Central Texas. We have 3 small independent fabric stores in town in addition to Hancocks and JoAnnes so I know we have it much better than many... however, a co-worker just told me that we have a brand new independent fabric store in town... it is called TexStyles Designer Fabric Showroom at 2605 Jones Road. Apparently it has only been open for about 3 weeks and the owner makes trips out to LA regularly and will be bringing back fabric. My co-worker said that the fabric was beautiful. She is a quilter, not a garment sewer but she felt that he had very nice things. It is open 10am to 10 pm daily... guess where I will be tonight after work!!
I wanted to let fellow Austinites know so we can all support this local business.

I will... I was hoping to go tonight but my husband took my car... to gas it up and wash it, so I hated to complain... perhaps an underhanded plot to keep me from fabric shopping! I hope I get to go tomorrow night!

melanie0313, I gave the new store a call and spoke with the on site partner. We're lucky to have him come to Texas from the California fashion industry. He plans to substantially increase his stock with his next buying trip. I think he suggested that I visit mid September. He said that he will ship and that, with a deposit, he will also scout out specific fabric orders when he is in California. I told him about PR. I hope everyone on PR who calls or visits him will let him know that they are from PR. Naturally, I asked him about a storefront in the Houston area and that is something that is being considered. Thanks again for the heads up.

I'll have to check that out sometime. Austin isn't that far from here! An internet storefront would be awesome!

I stopped by this afternoon - Holy Moley ! - some great apparel fabric. Here are a few paragraphs about the store at the end of a fashion column in today's local paper, "The other day I was driving through South Austin and came across TexStyles (2605 Jones Road. 512-212-4733), a new 600-square-foot fabric showroom from designer Benson Roberts and model Markhollan Swientek.
"Their showroom with its racks of fabrics is the type of store that helps a local fashion scene, and they plan to expand fabric offerings from 600 to 2,000 by early fall. Already they have knits mixed with angora wool and silk, Missoni-style fabric and textured fabrics and soon they will add dupioni silk, silk crepe, steel boning, button options, various elastics, trims and embellishments.
'Austin is an oasis of creativity and a desert of garment-making resource,' Roberts said. 'There are no resources. Our designers here are actually wonderful. We've been taking notes over the last two years. I didn't want to be too egotistical to assume Austin wanted these fabrics.' "

The prices there are really good - nothing over $15.00. I got some charcoal cotton 80%/angora 18%/lycra 2% jersey knit that is delicious for ----- are you ready? ----- $7.00 per yard. The owner, Benson Roberts, was very friendly and obviously enjoyed talking about the fabrics.

I highly encourage anyone in Austin interested in apparel fabric to stop by. Their hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. 7 days a week.

Now I have a reason to be happy that my youngest daughter wants to move to Austin when she graduates in May.

svetlana, you'll also be happy to visit her in the winter! Texas is a great place for a young person to start out.
