Date: 10/10/11 11:00 AM Hi. Let me explain my dilemma.
I am a sort of beginner sewer. I dont own a coverstitch machine or serger and for the holidays this year, my parents are offering me one.
I sew clothing and I have read online that coverstitching machines are really useful for that.
I want a babylock. My choices are the imagine wave, enlighten, and the evolve.
I need easy threading, four thread, differential feed, and it overall working well.
My biggest problem though is that at most eleven hundred usd is the most they'll spend. How much do each cost?
Should I also have the coverstitch in the machine, or just buy a cheaper, separate coverstitch machine? What cheap coverstitch machine would you recommend? Under two hundred dollars please. If not that under three hundred.

Date: 10/10/11 11:04 AM Heyyyyy. I think evolve is out of the question. It's wayyyyyy toooooo expensive for what I'm willing to spend. I'd rather just get a cheap coverstitch machine. Anyway would I get a better price on the wave than enlighten? What r the pros and cons of each? |

Date: 10/10/11 11:17 AM I have the Imagine which is just fine but the Enlighten has better lighting.
These do not do coverstitch.
I have a separate BL coverstitch machine and I recommend a Babylock or Janome. |

Date: 10/10/11 12:22 PM I paid about $2400 for the Evolution earlier this year here in central Texas--this is the 8 thread model that can do just about anything you can imagine a serger could do.

Date: 10/10/11 12:23 PM IMO...Enlighten! And the separate BLCS Coverstitch machine. Truly an unbeatable combination!
The separate sergers have smaller feed dogs and feet, making it much easier to serge curves and cross previously serged seams.
Altho it's quite quick to change threads and needles back & forth from serging to CSing with the Evolve/Evolution, it's still a PITA if you do a fair amount of serging.
I started off with the Evolve, but as I sew a lot of knit tops it meant constantly changing over. Most garments you can't just leave all the CSing to the end and do only that one change.
I'd serge the shoulder seams and attach the neckline...then have to change over to CS the neckline, then change back again to serge the side seams...
I also had trouble with the large feed dogs & foot, especially when crossing seams.
So I traded my Evolve in for the 2 separate machines and am so HAPPY!!! The Enlighten has a fabulously tight turning radius...it's SO tight, it's almost like regular sewing around any curves! And the lighting is superb.
The BLCS is simply wonderful. No problems, super easy to use, and not having to change back & forth is really really nice!

For $1100 you may find a used Imagine. Or save up to add to your parents gift. |

2 members like this. Why do you want a Babylock? There are many good sergers out there that you can get for a good price and have enough left over for a Janome CPX1000 Coverstitch machine. Janome 634 or 1110dx or Juki 654 Or Elna 664 Pro. Do they have air threading? No. You don't need it. I can thread one of the above mentioned sergers faster than the air threading Babylocks. Don't get me wrong, I like the Babylocks but you will have a hard time getting into even an non-auto tension, air threading Eclipse for what you want to spend. I personally like the Janomes=1110 or 634. Next is the Juki but the only quibble I have with the Juki is that upper knife. It distracts my eyes. But other than that I like it. I also like my non-air threading BL Eclipse too. ------
