I'm going to England for a week (Manchester, followed by a tour of Wales, ending in Exeter and flying out of London). I'll be passing through Chester and Pembroke.

Does anyone know of any nice fabric or notions shops to stop in? I'm currently looking for some nice buttons and perhaps some coutil or tweed also. I'd also like to try vilene interfacing which I can't get in the States. Also any other suggestions would be nice also!

I'm just assuming that there must be a nice shop or two outside of London/Savile Row, and unfortunately I won't be spending much time in London.

Thank you in advance!

There is a branch of Abakhan in Chester, though I wasn't wildly impressed when I was there 20 months ago. Jaycott's (try Googling them) have their base in Chester but you would have to know what you want. Then they would bring it to you - you can't browse their showroom but you can seewhat they have online. Nearer Manchester there is Leon's. I've never been there, but know the partner shop, Barry's in Birmingham quite well and they have nice stuff but you may have to hunt for it. I'm sure more local people could help more so I hope you will get more replies. You could try posting in the UK thread on regional communities too.
Have a wonderful trip
Anne

Thank you for your suggestions Anne! I posted in the UK thread!

I'm very much looking forward to tea, proper cream scones, yorkshire pudding, etc!

Watson & Thornton in Shrewsbury is well worth a visit if you are in that area, and Shrewsbury is a lovely town to visit with lots of beautiful historic buildings.
Their website is at www.watsonandthornton.co.uk

Karen found a good shop in Haye-on-Wye in Wales if you're going near there...

Also, don't bother with Saville Row in London - it is NOT fabric shops! For this, if you have limited time in London, you NEED to go to Goldhawk Road, out near Shepherd's Bush (it's easily walkable from any of the Shepherd's Bush tube stations, GoldHawk Road tube is on an awkward line even though it's closer).

A bit off-topic, but has there been any new news about the fate of Goldhawk Road?

If I ever travel to England, I would make a special trip to Linton Tweeds. Not sure where they are located...you might do a bit of research. They produce many of the tweeds for Chanel and dozen other companies.

Can I just suggest that you NOT say that you are "going to England including Pembroke" when you are over here... especially if you are actually in Wales.

It would be rather like saying you are going to Washington State, including Vancouver... Welsh people might get a bit upset if you said you were in England.

Cream scones are scones with cream on them (not baked into them) but they aren't really a speciality in any of the places you are going.

Thank you nellc, squirrellypoo, dresscode, petrol. My plans have somewhat been curtailed because of the weather, but hopefully I'll get a chance to go to a fabric shop or two.

KatieA, kind of like saying, "Hey, I'm going to Washington State, starting in Seattle, then going up to Vancouver, back down to Spokane?" ::rolls eyes::
