Date: 10/14/11 0:31 AM So over the past weeks I have occasionally noticed that my paper was not out front in the morning. I don't usually read it until afternoon so I don't go out and pick it up until later in the day. Strangely, after noticing that it was not there, I looked out later, hours later, and it was there. Several times I went looking for it in the ivy or the gutter which is a whole nother story with the carrier. No paper. Then VOILA it suddenly appears there in gutter at the end of my walkway. This does not happen every day. At first I thought I was just missing something or needed caffeine, but then I noticed an article clipped out of the paper!!! MY paper. And little things like the rubber band being wound twice. Our carrier does not do that.
So today I was home sick and just happened to be looking out the window. I had noticed earlier that there was no paper. So here I am on my couch looking out the window and a man comes casually walking down the street with a paper tucked under his arm . As he gets right in front of my house he drops it right where the carrier usually drops it. He does it in a nice smooth fluid movement as if he just perhaps placed it on the curb from the gutter.
Caught ! Red handed! I resisted the urge to run out at that point half dressed but watched which way he went and got a good description of him . I am really perturbed that some ***
out there just thinks he can pick up up my paper that I pay for read it, clip things, then have the gall to return it. I have a feeling I'm not the only one he's doing this to.
So any ideas? Is this really theft? I think the police would laugh at me....so far I'm thinking of videotaping him, printing it out, and then putting it inside the paper for him to see with a note that says "buy your own paper." Next one is to carefully place my lab's "business" in the inside fold.... Any other ideas? Do u feel entitled to your neighbors paper? Is stealing Ok if you take it back later??? I'm over 50 so maybe I'm missing something. Grrrrrrrrrh |

Date: 10/14/11 0:45 AM This is really awful. It is a minor thing, to be sure, but really creepy. I think your idea of taping him is EXCELLENT. If he knows he's been found out he most probably will leave you alone. ------ Barb |

Date: 10/14/11 1:08 AM yeah - my only thought is what if he's some nutto nut job and decides I've embarrassed him and then is out to get me...I've probably just been watching too much TV! But I want him to know that stealing is wrong even when u give it back, and you're not entitled to my paper. How to I know where your nasty hands have been while reading my paper. When they come off the presses they are sterilized I think. You could be doing all manner things with your hands while reading my paper. eeewwww........ |

Date: 10/14/11 1:56 AM Is picking your paper up at the moment its delivered not possible?
This has its spooky side, people with that much gall aren't usually 'normal' in their interactions with others, and clipping something out of it could be drawing attention to himself and inviting interaction. I'd say get a photo of the man if possible, let the police know - you could say that you're not expecting them to rush round with a squad car, but that you're informing them to be on the safe side.

Date: 10/14/11 4:00 AM You say that this isn't every day..is there a pattern? Is it the days the jobs are posted or the coupons? Maybe he can't afford a paper of his own? OK, I'm a softee..and I never believe people are stealing from us at work either, until they run out the door with a cartload of microwaves!
Can your carrier toss the paper closer to your door? and I do think that clipping items and returning it is very weird! ------ 2009-113.25 yds

Date: 10/14/11 4:05 AM This is creepy. Getting a few pics is a good idea.
Could you ask the delivery person if he/she could leave the paper right in front of your door for awhile, giving some excuse as to why? Maybe this would discourage the paper thief.
You said you watch a lot of TV so you will understand this: the neighbors might think that you are a spy of something and this man is taking your newspapers to leave instructions in there, then returning it to you. This is silly but it is what came to mind when I read your post. Guess I watch too much TV also. ------ I have not yet begun to procrastinate |

Date: 10/14/11 5:39 AM I really love the Newspapers App on my iTouch. I get my local paper, nearby cities, my kids cities, places we travel to or I am curious about. I can read at my convenience nearly anywhere.
DH loves the comics section in regular newspaper though and prefers that. So it just depends if you can adjust to online.
I might agree that the poor man is desperate and can't afford it- otherwise why so carefully return it? He may think you aren't home and wouldn't find out.
If you want to avoid confrontation, perhaps begin getting it earlier than he is picking it up. He might think you cancelled or you are on to him and go on to another home.
If your personality is such- try to keep a look out and then approach him about his behavior. Tell him you just want to understand why he is borrowing it. Perhaps you can offer him the recycled paper after you are done. Or put annote inside the paper asking him to knock on your door and talk about it.
Papers are expensive and yes, I believe you have every right to file a police report if you think that will relieve your anxiety.

Date: 10/14/11 6:26 AM Love your ideas! You could always replace the day's paper with past newspapers. I say have fun with it. It will probably take just once and he'll know you are onto him. If you get him on video, you ought to post on your FB. In any case, he is stealing. I probably would have yelled out the door just so he would be aware of the fact that you saw him. He would most likely find another house to steal from. |
