Hi,
I have never taken on a paid sewing job before but a lady has phoned me as she has been badly let down. She needs 9 table runners for a golf club dinner in 1 weeks time. She has the fabric and is popping round tomorrow so I can look at it.

I asked if she needs them lined (i.e. no seams showing) and she said no, and I said just cut out, overlocked and hemmed.

I have no idea what to charge per runner.
I am not sure of the sizes yet, should it be per metre??
In case they are big banqueting tables?

I think the cutting will be the biggest job, then I can overlock and hem with straight stitch.

I've said I would have a look, it's also half term which doesn't help!!
Not sure how long the whole job would take me.

Help!!
This lady is part of the company that we are using to sell our house. She is so nice, if I do her a favour I will be her new best friend, hopefully she will sell our house quick!!

It just depends on how big the table runners are going to be. If you don't have to fold and sew and miter the corners. It should be a simple job. Serger all the way. But if they are sewed and mitered. well that will cost more money.
In us dollars.
Serger simple about $10.00 to $15.00. Per cloth
Fold and Sewed and mitered. $25.00 to $ 30.00. Per cloth.
It depends on how many she needs.
I sewed table cloths and they were fitted. I charged a $100.00 per cloth and that included the fabric too. That was about 12 years ago.
Others will come along and tell you some more options.
this is what I would charge today.

I would probably calculate how long the runners will take me, and then figure out what I want to make per hour and go from there.

The main thing I wanted to comment on, however, was your line "as she has been badly let down". That statement raised a red flag for me. My experience has been that if someone tells you how disappointed they have been with others work, that there's a good chance they'll be disappointed with your work too. I'm not trying to be a downer - just cautioning you to have really, really clear communication with your client. It's best if she can show you actual samples or at least pictures of what she's looking for so there's no misunderstandings. Sometimes people who aren't sewists themselves don't understand what they're talking about.

Good luck and enjoy your project. I'm hoping it turns out beautifully for both of you.

Gosh, I wouldn't even want to do it unless I needed the money. I don't even know if I would let her walk up to the door with the fabric unless I was sure that I wanted to take it on I'd be more inclined to meet her for a sample of the fabric, serge it and hem it as you have planned and then get her okay on that finish. Or, insist that she stay long enough for you to finish up a quick little sample of the planned hem finish and get her approval for what you had in mind on the spot.

You did say it is half term, and you are in the middle of selling a house. Again, if you don't need the income, why do it? Honestly, when this type of thing has come my way, it has not made me any new best friends nor caused anyone to go out of their way to help with anything.

Pricing......................figure your time at a reasonable rate for skilled labor, your supplies (needles, thread, starch, etc.), a little extra for machine overhead and a little extra for an express order. Not kidding on the little extra for the express order; you're bound to get take out or pay for some other shortcut in your life to be able to squeeze in the time for an unplanned project on short notice.

If you do it, make some money! If you don't, there is nothing wrong with saying you're no; as always, smiling sweetly.

I think I need to say no. I am too nice.
I was so busy when she rang I didn't have time to talk.
It sounded like a good idea at the time, just not the best timing.

$30 each. Do a sample first and get the approval in writing as well as the price and delivery date. It is a business transaction so treat it as such.

If you tell her no, be sure to recommend someone who might be able to help her. She would most likely appreciate the suggestion.

I would give the lady the benefit of the doubt and look at the fabric and listen very carefully to what else she has to say and how much money she thinks my time sewing the table runners is worth to her.

I used an online custom made table runner calculator.A 72" x 15" plain cotton square end table runner would cost $ 23.83,including the fabric.( Banquet size table runners are usually 15" x 72" long ).If I wanted to sew the table runners,I would probably charge a minimum of 12 - 15 dollars for each table runner, depending on the quality of the fabric and size of the table runners.

Well she came round with her fabric.
I asked if they had to be in THAT fabric. white with large music notes on. She didn't look like she had enough fabric to me. As she wanted them 2 metres long and the fabric is not that wide. Also with making sure the music note appear in the right places.

From her conversation it is her husband that has bought the fabric. I pointed out you can buy the runners locally for 10 in plain colours. I'm not the fasted sewist and would have to charge at least that each. She said that's getting expensive and didn't think her husband had thought about that.

I think they thought it would be 10 -20 for the lot.
Anyway I said with half term I could not get them done in time.

So I turned her down.
