 1 member likes this. I'm seriously thinking about buying the Bernina 830, but I'm getting nervous about the price and whether it's too finicky. So I was wondering how people feel about their Bernina 830 after a spell? I'm also wondering if there's any word on what the next Bernina 830 will look like and when it will be introduced, since the only one on their website is an 830LE. Maybe I should wait? I welcome any advice!

Date: 11/15/11 9:34 PM I have had my 830LE since late July and do not regret it. I think the LE is more "tried" than the non LE version since it came out later. I think the 830 is less finicky than the 730 and Bernina seems to give you more tools to deal with issues that come up, such as thread nests in the bobbin case. I think it does help to be more of a "do it yourself" kind of person. I've had some issues with my 830--thread jams, won't start, etc, but I've been able to figure it out each time--usually by rethreading the machine and/or restarting it.
All the amazing features make up for the few(pretty minor) issues I've had.

I don't consider it to be finicky, you just have to know how to thread it and the bobbin and what to do if you get any error messages, etc. The manual is pretty good about explaining what steps to take to resolve the error(s). I've had some minor issues, some user error and others not. Nothing that could not be resolved. Once the 4,000 830LE's are sold, then the only one available will be the 830. Since they are promoting the LE, that's why they show only that one on the website. The 830 is still very much available.
I personally would not wait if this is the machine you want and you can afford it. The 830 and 830LE are the exact same machine, just different face plates. I would never again buy a TOL machine that just came on the market (tried that last year and got a lemon --different brand). Sometimes its better to go with the tried and true model that has proven to have all the bugs worked out. The newest model isn't always the best. I really don't know how they can improve on the 8 series, but I guess time will tell.  ------

Date: 11/15/11 11:24 PM No regrets here, only very thankful that I have this machine. I love using it. I know some of the early ones had issues, but I think those things have been addressed.
You cannot "hurry" it-I am an impatient button-pusher; but it is faster and more responsive than the 730, which I previously owned. |

Date: 11/15/11 11:54 PM My only regret is not having moved forward with new technology sooner as I had been happily humming along on my Pfaff 1229 for nearly three decades. It is a lot easier to invest in a machine though when you have had that kind of a payback.

Date: 11/16/11 1:40 AM I bought my 820 in June, love it! No regrets. When I was upgrading a year ago from my 20 year old basic mechanical Singer, I wanted a huge harp, dual feed, and knee lift. If I'd bought the 820 then, I would have saved thousands in machines I bought along the way. Now, I happen to enjoy having multiple machines, and there are just a few I need to sell, but my point is that it's ok to go straight to the top of the line if you know that's where you are headed anyway. Do avail yourself of all the online resources in addition to training from your dealer. This is a machine that has to be threaded correctly. Whenever I've had trouble, it's been my fault. Like trying to use the auto-threader when I've told it that I have the walking foot on (says right in the manual not to do so, and the machine is smarter than I am, often) or sewing with the cover on the thread stand-duh! It's big and heavy, so do some planning on bringing home this big baby. Enjoy!

I too am looking for new sewing machine and drawn to the bernina embroidery machines. I saw a demo of the 830 the other day and it is beautiful.. I am pondering if I really would use the functions of the machine to justify the cost..
Its not a money thing, it more will I really utilse it and get into embroidery as this beautiful machine does.. I have an old ELNA 900 which I purchased in 1991 which was TOL and I love it but I would love something else and something to grow into - if that makes sense! I like what I see what you other girls do and think I would love to do the same.. I am getting back into dress making for myself and Mum and have alot of nieces who are having babies, so I could made baby presents, birthday presents or whatever takes my fancy.. I have retired and am my Mothers carer so I have the time to play with it and it would be a distraction to the home situation in some way..
What I am scared of is that I talk myself out of buying this wonderful machine, getting a lesser one and then in 12 month times regret what my decisions.. I could not justify buying another one or upgrading.. its not something I could justify to myself. I am keeping my 9000 which is not anywhere near what these new machines do and I have a little Elna Lotus which I going to use as a sewing class machine.
I am reading this thread with great interest..
