Date: 11/28/11 10:18 PM Ladies (and Gentlemen),
I just bought a new Bernina 550 QE. I have always wanted a Bernina, saved my pennies and now I have it.
However my dealership is telling me that Guterman thread is not high quality and not the best thread to use on my machine. I have soooo much Guterman thread that I would like to use. Do you think I am ruining my machine? |

1 member likes this. Date: 11/28/11 10:25 PM Ridiculous. You can use any thread you want. If a machine costs that much, it should be able to handle it just fine. |

Date: 11/28/11 10:34 PM If it makes you feel better I'm using Gutermann (the standard poly sewing thread) on my new 580. I've always found their thread to be of high quality. I have used it for decades on TOL machines with no ill effects. The dealers I talk to recommend either Gutermann or Mettler. I can't comment on the cotton/quilting thread though, only the sewing thread.
The only thing I did find is Bernina is adjusted for Mettler thread which is slightly finer. I had to adjust my bobbin ever so slightly. About 1/8 of a turn. Alternatively I'm not sure if the 550 has this but on the 580 under settings you can adjust the overall tension on all stitches. Good if switching between Gutermann and Mettler and you don't want to adjust the bobbin. HTH

Date: 11/28/11 11:55 PM Personally, I dislike Gutermann. I find it noticeably more linty and prone to breakage. BUT, other than glazed hand-quilting thread, I don't think thread can damage your machine. Lint and thread bits can cause all kinds of problems, but frequent and thorough cleaning should be sufficient. If Gutermann works for you, use it! Aurifil, Masterpiece by Superior, and Presencia (sp?) are my favorites for piecing. Aurifil, King Tut by Superior, and Mettler for quilting. For general sewing, I like Mettler Metrosene and So Fine by Superior. But stick with the thread YOU love. ------ 🌸 Plenty of machines, mostly Berninas 🌸 |

Date: 11/28/11 11:59 PM I have always used either Mettler or Guitermann on my Bernina's. I like their quality.
There is some really cheap and nasty thread out there, In my opinion if won't ruin your machine but may leave more lint residue in the tension discs and bobbin. It doesn't usually perform as well as the above either as it can stretch inconsistently and cause your stitches to be irregular.

Date: 11/29/11 5:24 AM I use Gutermann on my B530 without any problem. I just make sure to adjust the bobbin tension depending on which thread I use. ------ Always a novice |

Date: 11/29/11 5:55 AM I agree with Soolip, you can use any thread you like. Like Sew4Fun said, the Bernina's are adjusted for a finer thread... 60wt I think, but you can have your tech adjust it for a heavier thread if you prefer to use them, or just adjust the tension when you sew, no big deal.
I don't care for Guitermen or Mettler cotton, even though they are both decent quality, good grief they are linty! Aurifil and Presencia make much nicer cotton thread. Presencia is my cotton thread of choice, I piece with their 3ply 60wt, fabulous stuff.
But I've never met a thread that any of my Bernina's wouldn't sew, it loves them all! ------ Bernina Artista 630 ✂ Bernina Aurora 430 ✂ Bernina 1300MDC ✂ Babylock BLCS ✂ APQS Millennium ✂ Juki TL2010Q ✂ Singer 201-2 ✂ Singer 301 ✂ Singer 401A ✂ Singer 15-91 ✂ Singer Featherweight 222K ✂ Singer Featherweight 221

Date: 11/29/11 9:56 AM I have used Gutterman quite successfully on my new 530. I totally agree that you should be able to use any thread you want on your 550. I have used many different threads on my Berninas through the years and never had a problem (unless the thread was bad)

Date: 11/29/11 10:13 AM I use only Gütemann and Mettler threads and I can't see any differences when I compare stitch quality. |

Date: 11/29/11 12:31 PM I use Gutterman, Mettler and (gasp) sometimes even C&C on all of my Berninas. None has ever had an issue. Mettler is only available from sewing machine dealers here so if I need thread on a Sunday it has to Gutterman or a hour round trip. No problem with it at all. ------ So many projects, not enough time
