Does anyone have a pattern for briefs?

Yeah, my user name is ironic at this stage...on a diet and exercise routine, but not there yet.

I am short, fat, and apparently better endowed than average. Consequently, I can NOT find underwear that actually fits me...it's like the manufacturers simply take the standard brief, hit "enlarge" on the Xerox machine, and make them with an absurd rise. Fruit of the Loom briefs, for example, actually reach my ribcage!!! Seriously, I'd have to be over 8 feet tall for those things to be proportioned correctly. And, the low rise options...well, they're small in more than one dimension, and just don't hold me in.

I give up!!! I'm going to HAVE to make my own.

Does anyone have experience with this type of project? I'm leaning towards the pouch style that lacks a fly, for size and simplicity, but can't find a pattern...and am fairly new to sewing, so my pattern making skills are essentially non existent.

Help?

While I have never worn them myself, I've made a few pairs for DH & DS. Two pattern companies, Kwik Sew and Jalie have such patterns and best of all, have well written instructions. I've used Jalie which also write their instructions for sewing machines rather than sergers. The other good thing about Jalie is that in one pattern there is 24 sizes which gives a load of options for getting your size right. The pattern will specify what sort of fabric but my favourite is a cotton/lycra blend with 4 way stretch. Try to use swimmer's rubber elastic (available in white or black), avoid braided elastic, it's too thick. Can't comment on knitted or woven elastic because I haven't used them in this application.

Good luck. Great thing about underpants is they take very little fabric and time to whip 'em up!

I use a vintage one for my DS, although give him a big red, turn him to the side and call him a thermometer thin.

My ex was morbidly obese. I redrafted the pattern (McCall's 1960 if I remember right) to fit him (somewhere in the 60s waist). He preferred the button style, although they also have the elastic ones.

I use Italian shirting when I make them, but my son likes that kind. YMMV.

ETA: the redrafting was not an issue at all. There were very few pieces to worry about, although I had to account for legs that were bulgy that you may not.

These are pouch style manties, but do have legs, or these are traditional briefs.

I know the first one has been well reviewed here, I'm not sure about the second one.

If you google Brian Sews, you will find a blog and videos of the man's underwear process. Be forewarned it is picture heavy of a man in his undies.

Kwiksew used to have a pattern for pouched no fly briefs. I just has a look and they are not longer on the website.

I made them for DH out of wicking knit and he loves them.

Well, if it's no longer available, would you be willing to share the pattern with me?

Why they can't make off-the-rack briefs that actually fit a man's shape, is beyond my comprehension...and yet the patterns are and have been available?! Maddening.

My ideal would be something with the 3" waistband and support of a jock strap, but with more coverage, and a back/sides. I did find something similar, but at $27 per pair (!!!) I'm not going to take the chance.

Check on Etsy and E-Bay for those Kwik Sew retired patterns, or other vintage styles that may have been cut larger.
Or perhaps you could use a swim trunks pattern that fits well?

My husband didn't like the store bought pouch type. I bought him some and he says he felt like he wasn't getting any support and he was just hanging.

Hi RNGR: if you go to the home page on this site, towards the bottom (is that a pun?) there's a link to patterns sold by PR. Click the Jalie link, you'll see two links for men's underwear.

or just go here.

The kwik sew site just shows boxer shorts right now....
