Date: 12/10/11 6:48 PM I'm making my MIL an apron from Simplicity 2824:
To my eye, it looks shorter than my RTW aprons, which hit closer to the knee. My MIL is 5'8" (all legs), and I'm wondering if I ought to lengthen it by a couple of inches. I have plenty of fabric.
I guess the lower thigh isn't really Stain Central while cooking :D, so it's probably not strictly *necessary,* but I don't want to give her something that looks skimpy.
Thoughts?

Date: 12/10/11 7:43 PM I am not that tall but I would want the waist ties to be at my waist, not 2" higher which is where most FTW hits me. On an apron, mid thigh would be fine. |

Date: 12/10/11 8:30 PM I work in a commercial bakery, I am 5'4" and the aprons end just about my knee.
My pet peeve with almost all bib style aprons is that they only cover one of the girls, there just is not enough fabric for coverage in the bib.
The other issue is that the waist ties are way too low for me, so I do fold it at the waist before tying (and the apron hits me at the knee, so it is at least 4 inches longer).
The commercial aprons do not have an adjustable neck strap. ------

Date: 12/11/11 7:45 AM I am a fan of aprons and wear them all the time. I am also 5'9. I second the thought that the ties need to be at the waist. That is my biggest pet peeve with purchased aprons. I would definitely move them down. I would also lengthen it a couple of inches. I prefer my aprons 3-4 above my knee, rather than mid thigh. How nice for her that you are concerned and have asked the question! ------

Date: 12/11/11 11:10 AM Hi, I'm 5'10" -- a couple alterations that always make on all patterns include to lengthen the armhole (this lowers the armeyes bottom so that it isn't tight under the arm; usually about 3/4" has to be added in length across the upper chest), make sure that the waist pattern is at my waist as other have said, and add additional length below the waist (to the rise and legs in pants). So for a skirt,dress, and apron, I'd add a few inches to make sure it was long enough on me (looking at the picture, it appears to fall mid-thigh on the model so it would be high-thigh length on me). You could always add 2-3" below the waist and if she feels that it is too long, just hem it higher. It more challenging to lengthen it if it is too short (you could add a frill, some sort of trim, etc.)

Date: 12/11/11 4:00 PM I'm 5'8". I agree with making sure the ties fit near the waist. For length, I like mine to be about 6" above my knee. Also, I prefer ties long enough to tie in front.

I'm not sure there's anything I can do about the location of the ties; MIL is not here for me to judge the location of her waist. I'm definitely planning to make extra-long ties so they can wrap to the front; though. I'm not really sure how long they should be, so I'm starting by doubling the the current length and cutting down if necessary. ------

I measured one of the aprons at work today. They are just under 30 inches from the top of the bib to the bottom, unhemmed selvage edge.
So I think they get two aprons from 60 inch wide fabric. I did not measure the width at the bottom, but they would be about 36 inches wide.
The waist ties on commercial aprons are made from shoe lace cording. They are long enough to wrap all the way around from back to front on my stout body. I did not measure them, but I would guess they are at least 36 inches each side.
It is easier to fold the waist up, than it is to tie a too high waist. ------

Date: 12/11/11 9:00 PM If the neck tie is adjustable, that allows the wearer to make the neck loop bigger or smaller and that will move the waistline (with the waist ties) down or up. Granted, it's not sized to a specific wearer, but there is some adjustment available to the person who wears the apron.
When I made my sister an apron like this, I put two ties on at the neck, so she ties a bow behind her neck to adjust those ties. She did not want a buckle; she said she hated hearing the buckle of her old apron clanking around in the dryer every time she washed it.
