As you know, we were honored by Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon on May 15th early this year at the PR Weekend Chicago for our commitment and support of the craft of sewing.

It's really encouraging to see sewing in the news. Well done Chicago Sun!

Thank you Deepika,

Several years ago I read about a Congresswoman (wish I could remember who) who started most mornings with an early morning visit to her sewing room. Practically speaking, her position placed a lot of demands on her wardrobe. But she thought it was important for her to maintain her creative outlet and use that little piece of time to maintain her focus.

The mystery congresswoman was a real inspiration at a time when I was working, had two young children, a traveling husband and was very active in our community. It can be fit in with some planning. And, it is about more than just producing a garment.

I keep asking myself why I started sewing again at 55. (Now 59.) It's not possible to justify in terms of economy anymore. It's costly in hours spent, materials, and sometimes frustration! I just find myself drawn first of all to colors and fabrics. Just like knitting, I find touching and playing with the materials is perhaps the most uplifting part! But it is also about producing an end product that is useful and filled with my own love and attention. This is why I love making dresses for my granddaughter (And they are small and easy!) even though she may only wear them a few times. (Like last year's wool and lined Christmas dress with the antique Christmas Hanky apron.) For myself, I hope to get good enough at this to make clothes that flatter my aging figure and that have a flair that is seldom found in the way average older women dress these days. Clothes should be fun and fabulous---entertaining ---and inspirational.Wearing your own designer clothes tells me something about you-- you're brave, bold, dedicated and creative! And that's a message I like to send to myself!

Well said Maggie. I sew because the thrill of converting a flat piece into something fabulous which I can wear is unbeatable!

Very nice article about the Lt Gov. I was in Chicago for the 10th anniversary weekend and got to meet her.

My DH was shopping with me this weekend and I wanted to stop into my local Bernina dealer since it was their Christmas open house. I really wanted a pretty red blouse for a party the next day and while in the store the owner showed me this beautiful piece of true red rayon with sparkles. I bought up a yard and a half and that evening cut my pattern and sewed the top. I finished it that evening around 11 pm. The next day I put my new red blouse on with my new charcoal grey wool skirt that I made using a Vogue pattern. I styled it with a RTW black and white plaid blazer and black boots. When I came into the living room, my DH was so impressed. He said "I can't believe just yesterday that red blouse was a flat piece of fabric that was on a roll in the store". He knew I sewed....lots.... but he had never been with me from where it all begins...with the fabric being cut.

I think he thought I was just in the sewing room playing....I think he now has a new respect for my hobby!! Of course I do play int here from time to time too!

Thanks Deepika! The reason I shared after reading the article, was I remember her husband being there by her side - so proud! I guess that reminded me of how my DH was on Sunday with my new blouse!

I began sewing at an early age to get out of wearing hand-me-downs that I hated. After 55 yrs of creating my own comfortable modern clothes I still hate seeing every other person wearing what ever is on "special" at the time.
