Date: 1/2/12 12:53 PM Definitely not trying to cause any alarm but I'm sure most of us in the USA wait for the 99 cents or $1.99 pattern sales from the big 3 pattern companies: McCalls, Simplicity, and Butterick. (I think Vogue is usually at around $3.99 when on sale)
I was just browsing Hancock Fabric's sale flyer online and was really quite suprised to see that Butterick patterns are on sale for $3.99! This seems quite high since we all have been spoiled by 99 cents and $1.99 pattern sales. Are the days of 99 cents and $1.99 pattern sales are going to be on the decline this year???
I always found it surprising that the pattern sales are so inexpensive when the labeling on the pattern indicates a retail price between $9 - $20. ------ www.bookwormbethie.wordpress.com

Date: 1/2/12 12:58 PM It's funny that you mention this, I was just looking through the same flier and wondering the same thing myself. ------ http://theramblingsoftcm.blogspot.com/

Date: 1/2/12 2:17 PM let's see, Hancock has -
McCall $1.99 12/26-12/28
Simplicity $1.99 12/30-1/2
Butterick $3.99 Jan 5-8
Vogue $3.99 Jan 5-8
Joann had -
McCall $0.99 Dec 30-Jan 2
Vogue $3.99 Dec 30-Jan 2
no change for Vogue, but it's interesting that pattern sales at Hancock starting in 2012 are higher. I thought I saw on a thread a long time ago about these sales that the patterns are sold on consignment, so when they are on sale for .99 or 1.99, they are taking the loss, not the stores. Maybe they've re-done the agreements? Or like someone suggested elsewhere that they are wanting to get more users on Club BMV? It will be interesting to see what's in the next fliers.
At any rate, I guess it's not a totally bad thing for me if they are not on sale at .99 or 1.99 any more - I will probably spend less, as I will be a bit pickier on what I buy. Perhaps no buying a pattern as spending .99 is easier than taking a few minutes to think and draw rectangles? Maybe no more multiple versions of the same thing. I mean how many wrap dress versions does one person need, esp. if they don't wear dresses ?
But I do know that higher prices could put a crimp in pattern buying for some. |

It does seem to me that the now normal ''sale price'' is 1.99 instead of the 99 cents we got use to.. This may be a rare sale now to find them at 99 cents.. I think you may have to wait longer for those 99 cent sales now.. |

Date: 1/2/12 2:52 PM I really think that's a typo. Butterick patterns aren't worth $4- the styles, the drafting, the sizing- they're just not that good. With Burda under the Simplicity umbrella, now is not the time to raise prices without having eliminated all of the old patterns and touted their new, better drafting or sizing or styling, which they haven't done. In fact, the styling is worse than ever- half of the new collection was made in inappropriate for the style, shiny, nasty, cheap poly taffeta. |

Date: 1/2/12 5:30 PM I have pretty good luck with Butterick. I like their casual tops and have found the fit to be good. The baby items are really cute too. Of course, your comment about the recent styling is true...but I rarely pay attention to the styling in the catalogs. ------ my blog: http://kf-biblioblog.blogspot.com/

Date: 1/2/12 6:02 PM I admit that while everyone has been talking about fabric stashes that I have been stock piling patterns for this reason. However, the patterns have to be exceedingly useful or have a particularly intriguing design detail to make the cut. ------ I have no idea what Apple thought I was saying so be a Peach and credit anything bizarre to auto correct. |

Date: 1/2/12 6:28 PM I like Butterick patterns. I like all the big 4. I remember seeing a price like this once before in one of the fliers(can't remember if it was Hancocks or Joanns), but the following flier, had the patterns for a lesser price. Let's keep our fingers crossed that this is just a glitch |

Date: 1/2/12 7:02 PM I know in Canada, our major fabric chain, Fabricland used to sell Butterick, McCall's and Vogue at sale prices. Not as good as the ones in the US, but still good. Now they have discontinued that. They still have sales on Simplicity and New Look patterns, but not as frequently as before.
I bought a membership to BMV as a result to have access to reasonably priced patterns.

Date: 1/2/12 7:10 PM I am organizing my stash of fabric, notions and patterns for my new year. Last night I went through all my patterns--->thank you PR Pattern Catalog!---and listed every wardrobe or coordinates pattern. I pulled them, and listed what items they contained. My plan is to sew through each of these and make up some coordinated capsules. I hope to not buy the ungodly amount of patterns I have in the past. ------ my blog: http://kf-biblioblog.blogspot.com/
