Hello, everyone. I have to go east to deal with some family financial junk at the end of February. It will be stressful, so knowing myself, I have scheduled in a day of decompression before I come home.

I'm in Denver metro, so local shops are good but not amazing (I love Denver Fabrics - not the web version - but they're an hour's drive away).

I'll have a car, a GPS, extra baggage space... I like linen, cotton, wool, rayon, vintage... I'm garment more than dec or quilting. I'm willing to sift and pick. I'm also just picking up lingerie, bra and corset making, so anyplace with a good selection of stretchables, elastics, under wires and the like would be great.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Make sure to find Vogue Fabrics and Fishman Fabrics. If you can only go to one, try the Vogue Fabrics in Evanstan. Vogue Fabrics also has a Chicago store which has Fishman Fabrics and Rainbow Fabrics close by, so that may be a fun trip.

I only made it to Vogue Fabrics in Evanston when I was in Chicago last April, but I managed to spend a few hours in there. I know that you said that you had a car, but if you decide that you don't want to deal with the car, the shop (really, it's the size of a small strip mall) is a short walk from the "el" station.

My fabric shopping experience in Chicago is limited to a couple of days during PR Weekend last May but my faves were Vogue Fabrics (both locations, Rainbow Fabrics, Fishmans and Soutache Ribbons (an amazing collections of trims, etc.)

Since we drove to Chicago we also made a couple of stops along the way at Ginny's Fine Fabrics in Rochester, MN and Gayfeather Fabrics in Madison, WI -- just in case you are driving and need appropriate "rest" stops.

Thanks, everyone, for the responses. I wish I was going north on this trip (I love Minnesota and Wisconsin almost as much as I love the Rockies) but I'm headed east into Indiana. (thus, the car, and it being necessary.)

Vogue and Soutache are now certainly on my list.

Textile Discount Oulet is south of the Loop. The place is a large warehouse; mostly home decor and can be a mish-mosh. But the reason I'm suggesting it is because there is a Groupon for it. I used my previous Groupon here to stock up on muslin. Muslin is $1.95/yd, but with the Groupon, it comes to just over $1/yd when you include tax.

If you go, note that they close promptly at 2:00p on Fridays and are closed on Saturday, but are open on Sunday.

If you are looking for evening dress fabrics or flashy trim, visit Supreme Novelty Fabrics.

If you are looking for the independent fabric designers, such as Jay McCarroll, Tina Givens or Kokka, go to The Needleshop.

If you're looking for quilt fabric shops, let me know. There's one in the city and some in the suburbs.

Since you're driving from Denver, have you considered driving through Wisconsin and hitting up Nancy's Notions?
