Just traced off my bodice piece for the fourth time! You guys are the only ones who would understand.

Just traced off and alteredy bodice piece AGAIN!!!! Not even up to cutting any fabric yet :(. I might have a dress in a few weeks. So I have finally come to realize from all my gaping necklines that I should be starting with a 14 rather than a 16, so I trace off the 14 and do my usual 1" FBA. Oops smaller size, need a bigger FBA. Then I trace off the wrong bodice view. Then I trace off the right one and do a 2" FBA. It looks really distorted using my usual FBA method. Trace it off again and do a Y style FBA, the armscye shape and dart size look much better. I still need to lengthen below the FBA and adjust the back, lengthening above and below the bust. I still need to trace and full bicep the sleeve, widen and lengthen the skirt......... No one IRL really understands how annoying all this slice and dice is! ------ Claire - Melbourne, Australia

The original paper pattern looked like an entire kindergarten class went at it with their little scissors. I hope you end up with a fabulous dress at the end of all of this. If you get the size vs FBA figured out maybe you can apply the same method to all of your future garments. MissFairchild, drafting my own patterns seems harder to me now, but I suspect I may end up there one day! MNBarb, I'm hoping that this alteration will begood for me for a while! I thought the 16 plus 1" FBA was right for a long time, but really it wasn't. Also my body keeps changing, I'm currently nursing and a bit heavier than I was prepregnancy, but surprising the alterations I need seem to be pretty similar to before. ------ Claire - Melbourne, Australia

It use to be so easy for me to make something up in a few hours, put it on and not even been concerned about that little stress line or wrinkle...I still have to give myself "permission" to wear something that has a little less fit than I would like. Sometimes that extra wrinkle makes the garment more wearable. Now that you are cutting your Neckline/shoulders on the smaller size, can you morph back to the 16 from the bust down and continue to use your 1 inch FBA.

But I also don't fit well into rtw any more because my body has changed so much. And also because tis changed so much, i need like an entire wardrobe now! But it is taking a long time to learn how to fit these changes. While nursing and loosing baby weight, I try to stick to looser things that don't require too much fitting. I'm going back to baby clothes today, so much more fun! ------ Melanie

For a very long time I thought I needed a bigger size up top because of my large full bust measurement. I found, through lots of trial and error, that I need to start with a small size at the shoulders. I do a Y type FBA also, and add in length to go over the girls. By the time I am done with alterations, the pattern piece looks bizarre. Your description of 'slice and dice' is perfect.
