I recently bought some inexpensive cotton lightweight fabric that has a pattern running down one edge, (a border print.) My skirt pattern has a layout with the skirt bottom at a 90 degree angle from the selvage. Obviously, I'd like to rotate the piece so the border print goes along the bottom of the skirt.

Question: What is my risk that the skirt will hang funny because I did not line up the pattern as recommended?

If your fabric is a woven (sounds like it is), this should not be a problem. Check the amount of crosswise stretch your fabric has. Most wovens have a little, but a few have more than a little.

If there is more than just a little, cut wide side seam allowances for your skirt so that you can adjust the fit. (Lengthwise stretch is a little like cutting on the bias - you can end up with a tighter fit side-to-side.) By cutting crosswise, you are also losing any slight side-to-side stretch your finished garment might have had.

Also, with a border print you will probably want a pattern with a straight hem to align with the border.

Thanks. Yes, it is a woven, and the bottom hem of the skirt pattern is straight. If there is added stretch, it is barely noticeable.

Never mind, misread the original question...

Border prints are designed so that you will use them with the border pattern running around the body. So don't worry, that's what the manufacturer expected you to do. It is not going to hang funny.

This is good to know.

SondraG, thank you for asking the question. I've been wondering about that. I've seen some of those fabrics and have not tried them yet.
