Can anyone tell me a trick on how to get machine buttonholes not to have whiskers along the edges once the buttonhole is cut open? The fabric frays and causes threads to peak out.

I use Fray Check and allow to dry. It actually works better if you you apply the fray check before cutting them open.
Hope this helps

Agree with the Fray Check. I apply it to the front and back, carefully covering the fabric in the middle of the buttonhole and the threads, too. I've also started applying Fray Check to the knot on my hand stitches for the attaching the button and to the threads on the front side of the button.
