I'm excited to be managing the swimsuit contest for the month of March!

Rules
Sew a bathing suit (swimsuit) for a female, man or child.
We will be limiting this contest to actual bathing suits. The following is a list of what will fall under the accepted items.
- Bathing suit- one piece, two piece or tankini
- Swim shorts
- UV protected wear swim wear
Not allowed:
- Swimming accessories such as cover-ups, Yoga wear, running attire or other leisure wear will not be allowed in this contest.
If you are thinking of entering the contest but are not sure if your item is appropriate for the contest, please contact the Contest Manager.
FAQ:
- You may sew for a woman, man or children.
- Fabric does not HAVE to be “swimsuit” fabric”.
- You may use a commercial pattern, or draft a pattern yourself.
- Vintage patterns are acceptable.
At least one photo is required to be in the review for this contest. While we would love to see a photo of you sporting your finished swimsuit, we do understand that not everyone is comfortable posing for a “swimsuit shot” A photo of the swimsuit on a dress form will be accepted. Of course a review with more than one photo is always appreciated, especially photos of construction and details.

Standard Contest Rules
- Unless otherwise stated in the rules, patterns may be drafted, tweaked, and muslined before the contest date, but fabric for the pieces entered may not be laid out or cut till the start date of the contest. Fabric may be pretreated before the contest date.
- Items intended for sale, or for which you were or will be paid to make, do not qualify for any contest, but items made for charity are welcome!
- Unless otherwise stated in the rules, all reviews written for a contest entry must include a picture of the entry.
Contest Eligibility
- Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the start of a contest is eligible to enter.
- Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the end of a contest is eligible to vote in a contest.
- Any member who's won 1st place in a contest on Pattern Review ended in the previous 4 months is ineligible to win another contest (for that 4 month period).
Guidelines for Voting on Contests:
Because of the high quality of the garments we're seeing entered in PR Contests, we're setting forth some guidelines that may help you choose when voting.
You may choose to assign a point value to each of the following criteria in order to narrow down your choices.
- How well does the garment/collection/ensemble/item fit the criteria stated in the contest rules? How well does it fit the spirit of the rules?
- Are the construction methods, including but not limited to seam finishes, lining techniques, etc, well suited to the design? To the fabric?
- Is the fabric choice well suited to the design? Are the lining and interfacing choices appropriate?
- Is the review complete and well written?
- Taking into account the stated ability level of the entrant, how well does the garment fit?
- Creative points. You may choose to give credit here for extras including embellishment, creative interpretation of patterns, creativity in creating a pattern, or even for having the restraint to leave something strikingly simple.
- Complexity of the project. Relate this to the skill level of the participant. If a participant is a beginner then a princess seam may get the same complexity level as an underarm gusset gets for an advanced sewer. This is purely subjective, but a complex garment might garner more points than a simple one if a tie-breaker is needed.

Date: 2/23/12 7:48 PM This contest is just at the right time for me. I'm going to start swimming for exercise & need a new suit.
I have this fabric & I'm planning a 2 piece: a tank top with boy shorts bottoms (long legs). Which would look better the stripes running up for both pieces or stripes running across on one piece?? ------

Date: 2/23/12 8:07 PM I'm in too. Just ordered Jalie 2446. It is really similar to a RTW swimsuit I have that I like but has reached the end of it's life. I am hoping to try some of the nice construction details used in the RTW pair.

On your striped fabric, don't rule out the possibility of the tank top made with the stripes running on the diagonal and forming a 'v' at the center front and the center back.

I ordered a Jalie pattern and a Danglez pattern last week to make suits. Plus I have the Kwik Sew book to work off of and a Burda pattern that I like. I think I'm set for patterns, now I just need to decide which one!! ------

Date: 2/24/12 11:19 AM I just ordered the new Jalie swimsuit pattern last month and I have a cute orange/gray nylon lycra that I picked up last year. I think it's aged enough now, so it's time for me to sew it up!
DD needs a new bathing suit, too. ------

Date: 2/24/12 1:40 PM I made a muslin of my swimsuit bottoms using the stripe fabric. Using a stripe is a good way to see where the fitting problems are, but I will NOT be wearing striped shorts!   I think I will use the stripe fabric for a tank top & use black for the bottoms.
I'm using this McCall's pattern as my starting point. It'll be like the green view. I have to down grade the size as it only comes in plus sizes, but that's too hard to do. ------

Date: 2/24/12 2:19 PM I like that McCalls Pattern. Are you going to use the serger for the elastic in the bathing suit? Is it easy to do? ------
