I'm in a bit of a fitting pickle. I'm thinking about using Simplicity 2248 for a project. I need to make a FBA to Princess seams (not a problem). However, the pattern piece for the dress is full length--it includes both bodice and skirt. To complicate matters, the princess seams only go as far as where the bodice would end and then they get sewn into pleats.

How exactly should I/would you go about dong the adjustment? I'm thinking that what I want to do is cut off the "bodice" portion of the pattern, do the FBA, and then reattach it.

Thoughts?

In an ideal world I'd do exactly what you suggested -- cut off and trace the bodice piece, do my FBA, and stick the altered copy on to the original skirt piece. That would also ensure that my seams lined up properly. But I don't know of any good FBA method that doesn't also add width to the front waist, so you would have to either compensate for that in some way or else alter the skirt piece to match.

I have a thick waist and I need an FBA that also adds width at the waistline, so I always have to be careful about altering the pattern below the waist as well if it is a dress or long top. Sometimes I forget and then the top and bottom become mismatched, which is hard to rescue after cutting out.

I believe what you have already been talking about is your best bet. Cut off the bodice to make the adjustment then morph it back onto the bottom. To help prevent an unfixable mismatch, I think a muslin would be a must have.
