Date: 3/8/12 7:52 AM Why is knit fabric getting so expensive? I have been looking for some pieces not out of poly for tees. The prices have been jumping, and saw some for $20 & above!! I couldn't believe it. Anyone know why? ------ There is no easy way! quote from my Grandfather

Date: 3/8/12 8:00 AM Um. let's see...It's because of:
1) high gas prices?
2) knit worms on strike?
3) polyester shortage?

Date: 3/8/12 1:48 PM Cost of cotton has gone up -
India bans export of cotton
Quote: Prices to a large extent hinge on China, as the world's largest cotton consumer has been hoarding stockpiles. China has been one of the main players in buying cotton fiber over the last year. China introduced a cotton buffer plan or reserve, to procure cotton whenever floor prices slips below the benchmark $3,018 a tonne or RMB 19,800 a tonne. The plan was announced in April 2011 and implemented from September 2011 through March 31, 2012. Most importantly, the procurement plan did not impose any quantitative limit to the reserve stockpile.
Quote: In the meantime, textile mills around the world have had to pay much higher prices for the fiber with demand outstripping supply. ------ Suo ergo maledicto

Date: 3/8/12 6:03 PM I assume that you are talking about rayon or cotton knits. Silk is quite a bit more. Quality is one thing and in knits it varies widely. The price of fabric as a whole has risen quite a bit in the last couple of years. Add the rise in fuel both to manufacture and transport fabrics and you get expensive goods. Sure you can find cheap knits but if you don't want polyester, and I don't wear it, you pay more for quality fabric that keeps it's shape and looks good longer. I have bought some less expensive rayon and cotton knits from trusted purveyors like Emmaonesock and have not been disappointed. ------ www.nancyksews.blogspot.com |

I was looking at them a while back but just didn't know what the fabric would be like. It appeared nice, but it could also be too lightweight/semi-sheer and/or have bad recovery.------ http://theslapdashsewist.blogspot.com
