Hi, I would like to know from anyone who has a dress form with knobs to turn and make it bigger, if it has no pole or stand up the center will it still work? Also can a pole be used to replace the real pole that comes in it for the stand? I see a dress form for sale, but I would need to use it at its largest size and it has no stand. Thank you for any help

I have an adjustable dress form sized for my MIL's measurements. I took the stand from that one and moved it to my own dress form (which had a crappy base), and the MIL one still seems just fine. It's sitting on a small side table at the moment (because my DH swiped my other form's stand for another project! LOL), which makes for tricky hemming. ;)

For your stand/base--it needs to be calibrated to your height, and it needs to be STURDY, as in HEAVY and won't move. The original stand to my form was a metal pole that screwed into a wooden base. Every time I worked with it, it would come unscrewed as I moved clothes around on the form. It was essentially unusable. Happily, the opening for the pole was the same size in both forms, so I was able to switch them easily.

I have an adjustable which I use for myself on its largest setting and although it does have a pole, I think you could easily replace it if it came out. It would have to fit, but I'm sure it could be replaced!

The answer to your first question is yes, because back when I had knobs on my dress form, I'd take it off and place it on my sewing desk to fit, etc., because the pole kept knocking over.

The answer to the second is "sort of", because you have to have something to keep the dress form from sliding down the pole; some kind of locking mechanism on the pole. Maybe a hole drilled into PVC pipe and a screw in the hole might work. For the base, you can use pieces of PVC in the shape of an H, with the pole in the middle of the H. (you'll need a T in that part)

I have one that did not come with a pole. I got a huge discount because it was lost. I brought it home and DH made a stand out of galvanized pipes from Home Depot.

She's getting an upgrade. As soon as the umbrella stands are out I'm going to get a really pretty iron one and switch her over.

I've got another one that was given to me because the orignal stand broke and I use the same stand for both.

I have the Uniquely You dress form and was totally dissatisfied with the base. I took an old office chair with wheels apart and used the base for the dress form. You will probably need to get a section of pipe to get it up to the height you need. It's wonderful - you can even "dance" with it if you wish! LOL

I love the idea, someone to dance with who is as clumsy as me with no way to tell! On the sad side I wrote back and the form was sold Lesson learned, buy and prep for buyers remorse later if need be.
