Hi everyone. I've been looking all over for patterns for workout wear--specifically tops. I can't believe how few there are out there. I don't want the t-shirt style tops or the plain tanks. I love Lululemon workout wear and would love to sew something like what they carry. The tops they carry seem simple enough. I'm an intermediate sewer so drafting patterns or trying to copy one of my existing tops seem above my realm. I thought about using a pattern for a regular top that is similar, but they call for lightweight fabric when I need to use swimsuit-type fabric. I'm not sure if that would work. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thank you so much!

Look at Jalie pattrens. Jalie Workout Wear They are very popular on PR for workout clothing. There are lots of reviews too and while the link only lists four patterns, there are other discontinued patterns as well you could source. Jalie OOP

G'day Lartrainer,

You can use swimsuit-type fabric ( or supplex/coolmax/milliskin types) instead of the fabrics suggested. They will have a good amount of stretch so you can use them on pattern suggesting a 4-way stretch of 50%. If the pattern requires less stretch, you may need to go down a size.

KwikSew and Ottobre have some great patterns for workout wear.

Can you post a couple of links to your favourite Lululemon tops? We might be able to recommend particular patterns.

Thanks so much for all the responses, everyone! I did look at Jalie and Kwik Sew, but they didn't have anything similar to the Lululemon tops I wanted--at least everywhere that I looked.

Here is a Lululemon top I'd love to be able to make Lululemon top 1. I'll add a few more in another post because every time I try to copy the link from my IPad the web page crashes. lol

Let me start by saying you are going to have to "think outside the box" in order to be able to assemble tops similar to the ones you are looking at. You're not going to find a pattern EXACTLY like the tops your favorite manufacturer, Lululemon, sells. For instance, Top L1 could be made by combining the top of KS2797 View A, with a slight modification to the racerback, a panel of jersey knit with four inverted pleats across the front and back, and a casing type hem with a drawstring and a stop for cinching the top at the hips when necessary. Be sure to look at the patterns members are suggesting with an open mind. A little bit of pattern redrafting and you could have the tops of your dreams at a fraction of the cost.

Oh, by the way, to get those enclosed seams (to prevent chaffing) like Lululemon advertises, you're going to need a coverstitch capable serger or stand-alone coverstitch machine capable of doing a 3-thread coverstitch. Those seams are covered with a reverse coverstitch. Of course, you could just zig-zag the seams flat, but it wouldn't have the look that RTW coverstitch machines can give it.

Good luck with your workout gear!
