Sewing Room Tables and other storage options

I have room in our laundry room to set up my machines, so that is the plan. I currently have my machines in there, but I have them sitting on a card table. I am looking into getting a small dining table to use as a sewing table and my husband thinks a larger folding table(like Costco sells) could work well for a cutting and storage area. I also plan to set up my daughter's machine on that table(she is 13 and wanting to sew too). I think for the little bit of sewing she will do, her machine will be fine on the folding table. Mine however need something studier. Do small dining tables work well for sewing? I don't have it in my budget to spend several hundred dollars on sewing specific furniture. I noticed in some of the sewing rooms people used tables instead of actual sewing furniture. I also saw a few office desks. I thought of that as well. I also think I can use the space under the larger folding table as storage for fabrics and other supplies. Any thoughts on this? ------ I'm fairly new to sewing but I am finding it to be fun and rewarding!

As for myself, my space is REALLY limited, so I have improvised. I actually use a card table for my sewing machine and another one for my cutting table. For the cuttin table, I raised it by using PVC pipe and put one of those superboards (cardboard mats) and rotary cutting mats on top. It's not the biggest, but it works in the space that I have. I use two executive credenza's for my machine and serger. They are 6' x 20" deep. I got the sewing machine credenza for free and paid for the other. Both off Craigslist. They are solid wood and very heavy. A small dining room table will work. Be sure it is very sturdy so you won't get any vibration. You can also get a solid core door or a counter top and lay it on top of two cabinets or file drawers. Storage under the folding table is a good idea. You can use plastic totes and stack them. I het a lot of shaking with my current set up. I have been looking at the plastic drawers and hope to buy a couple of those. We have a small filing cabinet that would work well for my pattern storage. It might serve well as a good place to set my extra serger once I buy the new one! CraftAddict Intermediate OH USA Member since 9/1/10 Posts: 276	Login to reply to this post Like this post Date: 3/19/12 12:45 PM word of caution on the folding tables: they are not good for sergers. or it may be the fact that i have probably the cheapest janome serger on the market lol. it has suctions on the bottom but they won't adhere to the table surface & the machine just bounces all over the table. i've considered getting a piece of plexi glass to go over top or maybe a thick cut of wood to make the table top more stable but I haven't gotten to that. Otherwise they are a great option. I have 3 of the 4x2 folding adjustable height tables in my room from sam's club. I keep one of them to the heighest setting for my cutting table. I would LOVE a larger cutting table but I just don't have the space. The other 2 I have in an L-shape. My sewing machine sits on one and my serger on the other.

If you don't like the way it looks paint it white. I like white because its easy to find storage bins that are white or clear to look pleasing and easy to the eye esp. if you are piece mealing the space tog. Another option is Ikea adjustable Galant legs, double a work top and put the machine a bit lower then 29 inches, use an acrylic extension table made for your machine so that it is a comfortable height. katlew03   Advanced FL USA Member since 1/4/08 Posts: 3401	Login to reply to this post Like this post Date: 3/19/12 2:25 PM I have a small sewing room - 8 x 10 -- that houses 2-6ft. bookcases, 2 30 bookcases, 1600 yards of fabric, 500 patterns, 3 SMs and 1 serger. We purchases two 6 ft. countertops with a mitered edge and placed them in a corner to form an "L" and braced them underneath where they joined. We built shelves at each of the two ends but you could use file cabinets instead. This gives me quite a bit of counter space at the height I chose. I set up my Viking Diamond with embroidery unit on one side and my #1+ and serger on the other. I have no vibration from the serger. The front edge of the countertops is 45 inches along each side (90 inches total). We did make one mistake. When we built the shelves, we did not set them back. The shelves are too deep and too close to the front edge of the countertops. If I were to do it again, I would have the shelves recessed so they were not as deep, allowing more room for my knees in front of the serger. The shelves are so deep that I forget I have stored things behind my little plastic pull-out drawers. Because the countertops are so deep, there is plenty of room behind my machines to place scissors, etc. while I am working. ------ Total fabric on hand: 1/1/13 1683.731 yds Sewn in 2012: 176.212 yds 2013 Goal: 400 yds (again) Jan -- 38.0 (11 items) Feb -- 6.5 (5) March -- (8.5) (2) April -- 17.66(18) May -- () June -- () July -- () August -- () September -- () October November December Total yards sewn to date -- 53.0 yards

Hubby cut a hole and made a shelf and my machine sits flush in it...its great. My overlocker (serger) sits on the table at the other end and I just slide my chair over when I want to use it. Works for me, although I'd like another table set at an L for my overlocker and coverstitch machine...but space is lacking at the moment...sigh ------ Blessings Janice

Date: 3/19/12 5:29 PM My DH has this idea (obsession) that if we put heavy furniture/bookcases/storage units in our home that they will fall through, thus destroying our home. Thus we can only have so many furniture pieces in a room. Does anyone else have that fear? Is it really an issue? PS Our home is at least 70 years old and seems solid as a rock.
