Date: 3/19/12 11:55 PM I know there was a thread recently about pools, but I was wondering if anyone has experience with one of the smaller swim spas where you can get in and swim or exercise with the current. It also has seats on one end with the jets. We are looking at putting one in but I am so scared of spending the money. We have never done anything like this. I have a knee and hip problem giving me fits as well as a weight issue. This past year I have seen a drastic decrease in my flexibility and balance and now with the constant knee and hip pain, I am scared. All my doctors recommend water therapy. I start that tomorrow at a Y, but it is very difficult to schedule as I work all day, and she only does therapy 2 mornings a week. Pros - I'm sure it would help the joints and hopefully weight loss. I would not have to go anywhere to do it. I love love love to swim - to just be in water, or I use to when younger. I used to swim laps for an hour non stop and it was like a runner's high to me. Cons - That was a long time ago, and I may be just dreaming that I could even bob anymore....I might tire of it. It costs a bundle. In addition my DH has pretty severe Type 2 diabetes and I've read that many are able to reduce insulin dosage and swelling with use. His feet stay so swollen i can't find shoes for him. He wears sandals all year.
Anybody have one????? We're not rich but I can afford it. I'm just so scared of making a mistake. Of course my DH says when we're dead from our various ailments, it won't matter! Advice please?

Date: 3/20/12 9:58 AM The benefits of aquatic therapy and exercise can absolutely not be overstated. Besides swimming, there are specific aquatic exercises to address the issues you've mentioned.
I found it extremely helpful to hire a certified physical trainer and aquatic exercise instructor to work with me in the pool just as a trainer would work with someone in the gym. It only took three times for her to work me into a program that I have been following for about 20 years. Prior to that I could not (in my late 30's) keep up with the senior arthritis class. It gave me my life back and regained it for my family.

Date: 3/20/12 3:43 PM Also you don't just want water therapy you need heated water. My husband does this only he goes to a place for the handicapped and they have a heated pool. I would have loved to gotten something at home so it would be easier for him but nothing really fit the bill. I would really research this. ------ quiltingwolf.blogspot.com |

Date: 3/20/12 4:49 PM Well, I just got back from my first pool therapy appt at the Y with the physical therapist. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. It felt so good to be in the water. She let me spend some time just swimming on my own and it was heavenly. Then we got in the hot tub. Oh , My! I did things with my legs and lower half that I could never do otherwise and I feel so good now. However, I have to take off work to do this 2x a week and I know it can't last forever. I know that eventually I would not go at night on my own just due to inconvenience, varying work schedule, and just plain too tired. But i would walk out my backdoor and jump in easily.
We also got an estimate from someone and they quoted us $23, 800.00 which I feel is excessive. We were hoping for around $15, 000.I was hoping someone out there either had one of these set-ups or had used one. It's lot of money....

Date: 3/20/12 9:44 PM I am also interested. I love exercising in the water, and currently swim and do water aerobics. But if we move I likely won't have access to such a great pool, and if these work it would be great.
However, I am hesitant, because I vaguely remember reading someplace that they didn't work as well as advertised. I'd love to get some more first hand information.

Date: 3/20/12 10:01 PM My best friendfrom grade school (we're now approaching 63 yrs old) uses one of those pools. This is the second one they have built for her (due to moving). She lives in Florida and swims in it all year round. She can heat the water. They also have some kind of salt water treatment vs. using chlorine. She loves her pool and really missed it when they bought their current home. It was one of the first things they added to the property.

Date: 3/21/12 2:28 PM I have been looking into this, too. I believe the pools that provide a current, such as this one
are better than the ones that provide a bubbly jet stream, like this one. NAYY
However, you have to weigh the benefits, costs, and features yourself.
I used to have a prescription to go to a heated saltwater therapy pool, and it was wonderful! But, like someone else said, it required time off from work, as the pool was only open 8:30-4pm. So the therapy pool was not a permanent workable solution.
Please share what you find out!
